Red River Gorge day trip

Let's meet at the Shell Station that's referenced as the Natural Bridge Shell (location to pick up camping permits/overnight pass).  The address is 12187 Campton Road, Slade, KY 40376.  Ph# for the Shell is[masked]-4100.  This way we can convoy to the trailhead without getting lost for those of us who have never been.  But please be sure to let me know you will be meeting the group here so we don't miss you.

The Red River Gorge is Exit 33 on the Mountain Parkway, which is where the Shell Station is located.

We will plan to do Gray's Arch first and then head over to do Trail #[masked] - Auxier Ridge, Courthouse Rock and Double Arch.  This should be plenty of hiking for the day and depending upon the group and how everyone feels, this could be modified.  Free maps are available at the Shell Station as well as waterproof topo maps.  Here is a link to learn about some of the trails, although there are quite a few websites with info on the trails:  http://www.redrivergorgehiking.com/ or http://hikeky.com/red-river-gorge-auxier-trails/

Please bring water and food/snacks for the day.  Please be sure to wear sturdy shoes and thicker socks.   A change of clothes may not be a bad idea if you want to change after the hike.

Of course, it wouldn't be a trip to RRG unless we had Miguel's pizza after the hike.

Carpool:  Kohl's at 96th & I-69 (Fishers area).

Depart Parking Area:  7:00 AM

Return will be late.

Private message me for my phone number if you need it.

See you all Saturday!

So Sharon and John are our two main drivers. If we can hear from everyone, I can be flexible to meet just about anywhere in Indianapolis, (since I am running a friend to the airport prior to this). If everyone is accounted I will go to whichever site makes the most sense to get everyone their comfortably. I will check throughout the evening for responses.

      July 18, 2014

    • Sharon

Sounds like we have everyone accounted for and I will be able to accommodate those who have not responded....yay! See you tomorrow! :)

I see so far that Sharon appears to be driving from the 96th Street location; and John from Lafayette will meet Sharon at Shell with possible pickups in Lebanon and Emerson. I am from Kokomo but I have to drop someone off at the airport. A pickup at emerson would be closest to the airport but if John is still full or is not stopping at emerson, then meeting at 96th is my best option

      July 16, 2014

    • John M.

Yes - I am still full as mentioned below. If that changes I'll post an update.

I have only been doing the hiking meetups for 4 months in 3 different groups, but have been lucky not too be rained on yet.
I assume if it rains, we will continue on.
Forecast in Slade for Saturday is 60% chance of rain.

    July 17, 2014

    • John M.

I will throw in my 'rain' hiking hat just in case :)

Just confirming to anyone interested I am confirmed with the 1st 3 that asked for a ride so I'm full.

We will not be stopping at the 96th location but will be proceeding directly via the west and south side of Indy.

    See you Saturday!

I'll be coming from Lafayette and am tentatively picking up 2 people, one in Lebanon and the other at the Walmart parking log on Emerson road just south of the Emerson 465 Exit. I have one more spot. If anyone would like me to ride me from the west or south side of Indy, without needing to go to the NE corner of Indy, just shoot me an email.

If you are in kokomo, the car pooling location on 96th street should work fine for you. My car is a Highlander SUV but I'm already full now. You might shoot Sharon a note and see how their car pooling is going. In the past, when we had much larger attendance for this hike, everyone just met at the car pooling location and decisions on who was driving and all were made right then. But 96th street is out of my way so this time I thought I'd try to get a car load going ahead of time which has now been done.

      See you at the hike!

      July 13, 2014

    • Sharon

No official commitments yet and you should be fine to ride with me. I too have a Highlander SUV and will fit 3 comfortably although I could possibly fit 4 people. Just let me know. We will be returning that same night only late.

Can you comment more on distance, difficulty level and the other meetups for July and August. I am interested in some or all of the hikes but want to be honest in my assessment to complete these hikes.
I can complete all the hikes because I have traversed difficult trails before however sometimes at a slower pace. I do not want to hold back the group if it is too difficult.

    June 22, 2014

    • Sharon

I mistakenly posted the same hike to repeat in July and August....right now I only have July 19 slated....but will have 2 more adventures to the park to try different trails in Sept and Oct. The particular trails we will hike are not very strenuous but are fun and beautiful. We will try for 8-10 miles, maybe a mile or 2 more....will depend upon time of day, and how every feels. Some areas we may spend some extra time....especially at the double arch.....it's breathtaking! Parts would be beginner and some would be intermediate...this park is too beautiful to speed hike....you will be fine :).
