The following message was posted by Silvia (Julie is also Jewel)

"Thank you all for taking the time to read this and for keeping Julie and our family in your prayers during this difficult time. Julie was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008. Shortly after her diagnosis it was discovered that the cancer had metastasized and had spread into her spine and liver. Over the past 5 years, Julie has undergone 5 different treatments including chemo and endocrine therapy. All with the hopes that while buying time with each treatment, there would be a cure. She was fortunate in the way that she remained healthy and active through most of her treatment. Unfortunately, this past month her cancer stopped responding to all treatment and spread throughout her body. Her health has rapidly and dramatically declined. We have decided as a family it is in her best interest to not move forward with any further treatment. We will make every effort to make sure she is as comfortable as possible and that she is surrounded with love. Julie is a fighter and has fought a courageous battle these past 5 years. She is full of life and love and is a wonderful mother to her 3 boys. (Mathew 17, Marcus 10 and Evan, 8). She is a dearly loved mother, daughter, Auntie, sister and friend. Your prayers and support are very much appreciated."

Please allow photos to be posted. I had the honor of meeting Matt and his Dad on top of Little SI. It was an honor to have a picture taken with him. Two hikers from Vancouver BC also attended.

I'm shocked and saddened by the loss of Jewel. My deepest sympathy to her family and friends. She will be dearly missed by many who were fortunate to have met and hiked with her in the Pacific Northwest Hiking and & Backpacking Group which she created. I was introduced to hiking through her group almost six years ago. Thank you Jewel!

Unfortunately Jewels family will not be able to attend on Saturday. I will postpone the hike for a date in the future. My apologies.

Heather, I was looking forward to this tearful hike in memory of Jewel, who is so deeply missed by many people. My knee isn't ready for a hike yet, as I had hoped. Recovering from a hiking injury. Thank you very much for leading this special hike!

Hey - I'm in Puyallup/Sumner; anyone interested in carpooling? My vehicle or yours.

If someone needs a ride and can take a bus etc to the Eastside Park and Ride (just east of I405 on I90), drivers can quickly and easily pick up riders there.

Wow. I had no idea it was that bad. I had just met up with her about 2 months ago to catch up and have a play date with the kids. My condolences to the family.

One of the first Meetup hikes I ever did was with Jewel. I enjoyed her company very much and I know that she will be missed greatly by all who had a chance to spend time with her.

Folks asking what to take (others feel free chime in): The 10 essentials. Enough food and water to spend a long day if necessary. Seasonally appropriate cloths, including a good shell, extra layers, hat and gloves. Do NOT wear cotton!! For reference i will be bringing head to foot shells and layers, hats, gloves, and shell-gloves.

Hi, I’m new to this group. Do I need to bring any special gear?
    Thanks for doing this.

If anyone needs a ride, feel free to message me. I currently live in NE Seattle and can do pickups in my neighborhood or on the way.

I fell out of touch with her a couple years ago but got to join her on some meetup hikes and really enjoyed her company (and that of her son and dog, too!). I was really saddened to come across this page today.

I just joined this group so I never had an opportunity to meet Jewel , but it looks like she was a well loved by all. My sympathies go out to her family and friends. Would like to join the hike and meet her friends, but need details about where, when, and is it an overnight or day hike? Note above says Oct. 12-13? Thanks

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of Jewel. I will be helping my in-laws in Twisp at that time, or I would definitely go. Healing thoughts for her family.

I'm not much of a regular around here but I did have the pleasure of meeting Jewel once on a trip she organized to Mt. Pugh. It was a super fun hike and a great group of people!
So sorry to hear what happened. It sounds like you all have been through a lot lately. My love goes out to the boys and the rest of the family. Stay strong and heal well.

Jewel, you are gentle and kind person. I really enjoyed hiking with you. I realized that you have been sort of quiet and I have been busy with my own thing and time just flies and I have no idea you were fighting for your health. I am so saddened to find out about your long battle and I feel selfish. My prayer is with you, Jewel.

Jewel- you and your family are in my thoughts and prayer. I have so enjoyed this hiking group. Thank you for everything you have done to make it happen. Miriam

I had the pleasure of meeting Julie for the first time back in 2010.
She's a great person and I want you to know Julie that my thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family/friends. I'm currently out of country but I'll try my best to take emergency leave so I can attend this outing. Stay strong my friend and Godspeed.

Unfortunately I will not be able to take part in this hike, but I just wanted to say how sorry I am to hear this news. I don't know Julie personally, but my heart goes out to her and her family. As a mom, my thoughts are with those boys in particular and I wish them strength and comfort in the very difficult time ahead.
