When I lived in Alaska, there were as many people killed in the back country each year by moose trampling as by bears. But the bears get more press.

1) contact rangers in the area you will be going to
2) follow their advice

5) the bugs are legendary
6) you must be adept at map and compass navigation and have current topos and a good sighting compass with adjustable declination. A gps is not a substitute
7) be prepared to be self-sufficient. You can get weathered in, stuck behind washouts, lost, set upon by wildlife or out-of-season monster storms, on and on

Hi, and sorry for cross-posting (first time using MeetUp) -- I'm from the midwest but have lived here for several years now. This summer (second half of June), I am headed up to Alaska for a 1-2 week long hike.

Would any of the more experienced trekkers be willing to share your knowledge and offer some tips as I figure out how to go about this? I'd be happy to treat you to a coffee if that's easier; I'm living in Belltown but happy to come over to your part of town!
