Hike Lower Big Quilcene

  • Top Foods

1313 Cooper Point Rd SW, Olympia, WA (map)

    47.034790 -122.940125

  • Park near Pier 1 Imports.
  • Let's hike the Lower Big Quilcene trail to Camp Jolley (5 miles each way), or Bark Shanty Camp (2.6 miles each way).

This is a relatively low-elevation stroll through the woods.

Let's leave Olympia at 7:30 - Haggen on Cooper Point is ok with carpooling, but feel free to suggest other options.

Please bring $10 for the driver and your 10 essentials. If you have a National park or NW forest pass, please bring it.

Pouring rain will cancel this hike!

I've changed the $ for the driver to $10 - this is a pretty far drive. Also, please bring a NW forest or National Park pass if you have it.

Thanks everyone for your support on the decision to reschedule. I'm rescheduling for 3/8. Hope to see you then!

  • Christopher

Hi Stefanie, I fully support your decision to postpone this hike for another time. Thank you for monitoring the weather so all who are involved are ultimately safer!

    1 · February 7, 2014

  • Trish

Thanks for putting this together Stefanie, and thanks for being able to make the tough decision to cancel to ensure safety for all! I might take advantage of the snow forecast and go snowshoeing instead. Stay safe!

    1 · February 7, 2014

  • Bonnie

    I have a NP pass.

    1 · February 6, 2014

    • Stefanie R.

      Great! We're definitely covered, then.

      February 6, 2014

  • Dagmar G.

Can we figure out the details on car pooling at the meet-up point, when we know who all is really showing up? And if someone has Bill's phone number we can let him know if we have an empty seat, and come to pick him up, or if he needs to drive himself.

    February 4, 2014

    • Bill V

Awesome. Look for a Silver Subaru Forester behind the ARCO station. I will bring my pass.

      February 5, 2014

    • Stefanie R.

Dagmar - you can ride with me if we don't need the van - I have heated seats! And maybe I'll throw in an air freshener. :)

      February 6, 2014

  • Monica

I have been scheduled to work. Sadly, I have to cancel. I definitely will make the next one.

Thanks for letting us know ahead of time. Hope to see you on another hike!

I have been scheduled to work. Sadly, I have to cancel. I definitely will make the next one.

    February 6, 2014

  • Stefanie R.

I know I said pouring rain will cancel this hike - how do you all feel about snow? Especially the possibility of driving 2 hours in the snow on the way back?

I'm inclined to reevaluate tomorrow and reschedule if necessary. I'd reschedule for Saturday the 22nd, but first I'd like to hear your thoughts - especially the drivers'.

    February 5, 2014

    • Amber

I am not familiar with the area so I will defer to those who are

      February 5, 2014

    • Stefanie R.

The forecast has changed to no snow Saturday! Let's keep it as-is. (Yay!)

      1 · February 6, 2014

  • Cynthia F.

I'm game for driving, hiking or whatever in any weather. I'll support whatever decision you make regarding the hike- keeping as scheduled, changing venue or reschedule.

    1 · February 5, 2014

  • Gail

just figured out that I have a NW forest pass, so I'll bring it in case someone needs it (would prefer not to drive, though).

    1 · February 5, 2014

  • Cynthia F.

OK Christopher- I'll put you down for a seat in my car- still have room for 2 more.

    February 4, 2014

    • Gail

      I'll take a seat!

      February 4, 2014

    • Monica

I would like to ride too. : )

      February 4, 2014

  • Stefanie R.

I have a National Park pass and will drive. It sounds like we have four total drivers:
    Me (with NP pass)
    Cynthia (with NW pass)
    Dagmar (no pass)
    Amber (no pass)

Plus Rose and Bill leaving from Shelton (pass? no pass?)

If you have a NW forest pass or National Park pass, please reply to this post so we know we'll have enough.

    February 3, 2014

    • Bill V

I have a pass and I guess unless you have room in one of the cars coming from Oly I will drive myself to the TH. My starting point is at the Shelton Walmart.

      February 4, 2014

    • Stefanie R.

I think there'll be room in one of the cars - one is a seven-seat van. If it's more convenient to meet us at the trailhead, that's fine, too. We are short on passes right now so it might be nice to all arrange to share rides.

      February 4, 2014

  • Rose

Sadly, I must withdraw from this hike...... Hospice has called upon me. Thank You, Bill, for your willingness to share your ride..... I hope to meet up you on some future trail..... Have a Splendid day !!!

I don't mind driving and can fit 3 more people in my car. Do we need a WA State park permit where we are heading?

    February 2, 2014

    • Amber

Oops! I have neither but I still don't mind driving

      1 · February 2, 2014

    • Stefanie R.

Maybe someone who's not driving will have one.

      February 3, 2014

  • Dagmar G.

Just found out I'm in, and I'm excited. I have a van that seats 7 but it's funky and the heat doesn't work too well. so if we're desperate for drivers we can use that.

    1 · February 3, 2014

    • Stefanie R.

Way to sell it! Definitely drive that to the meetup and we can figure it all out.

      February 3, 2014

  • Cynthia F.

I can drive, room for 3 and have a NW pass

    February 3, 2014

    • Christopher

Hi Cindy, I would like to ride along please.

      1 · February 3, 2014

  • Stefanie R.

Just a reminder that we'll need a couple extra drivers. I have room for three in my car. Any volunteers?

    February 2, 2014

  • Rose

Would anyone be willing to pick me up at the Shelton Walmart/Arco parking lot, which is immediately off Hwy 101 North { Wallace Kneeland exit} ? I will, of course, be happy to pitch in for gas. Many Thanks......

    January 27, 2014

    • Bill V

Rose, I will be at the Shelton Walmart just before 8am and am willing to drive. I have room for two more if anyone else is interested.

      1 · January 28, 2014

    • Rose

Wonderful ! ! I will plan to be at the Walmart lot - near the ARCO - at 7:45 AM, just to be safe. Thanks, Bill.

I just go the notice that I've been confirmed on this hike from the wait list. I'm so sorry but I'm not going to be able to attend on that date. I've had another commitment come up. So feel free to move another person into my spot. Bummer, because this would have been a great hike to do with you all.

    January 26, 2014

    • Stefanie R.

Hi Judy, Sorry you can't make it. Please change your RSVP to "no" so someone else can take your place.

      January 27, 2014

    • Judy C.

Oh, never had to cancel before so didn't know to do that. Sorry. Done. Hope I can join you another time.

In case we have some newer (or returning) hikers - here's the Mountaineers' 10 Essentials list. http://www.mountaineers.org/images/tenessentials_web.pdf

  • Dagmar G.

so which one will you do? for that long a ride I would like to hike more than 5 miles.

    1 · January 25, 2014

    • Stefanie R.

I plan to hike 10 miles round-trip. If other hikers would like to make the shorter trip and hang out at Bark Shanty, that's fine too. We can work all that out when we meet up.

  • Sonya D.

A little too much for my first hike coming back from recovery...maybe next time :-)

    January 25, 2014

  • Sonya D.

How long do you think this hike will take?

    January 24, 2014

    • Stefanie R.

Around 5 hours, give or take for mud, stops, etc. Plus 3 hours for travel round trip.

      January 24, 2014

  • Lorey

Wish you left a few hours later, not an early bird.

    1 · January 24, 2014

    • Stefanie R.

Hi, Lorey. Sorry you can't make it. This hike is 1.5 hours away, so it'll pay to get an earlier start. I'm sure there will be hikes starting later once daylight savings time is over.
