Mount Rose Exploratory (hike and maybe some snowshoeing on the ridge)

Update for Wednesday: The weather forecast Wednesday at the 1000 meter level on nearby Ellinor is for partly cloudy with no rain. This is very different the the sea level forecast at Hoodsport, and also much better than the rain and light snow up higher previous two days. We are likely to combine trail walking, snow we can walk through and maybe some deeper snow above Horse Camp and along the ridge. Have a look:

Route: The drive from Olympia is short and views will be great at the summit and along the ridge if the skies are clear for this 6.2 mile round trip with 3500 feet elevation gain.

Gear: In addition to the 10 essentials, bring snowshoes, trekking poles, and the ability to stay warm and dry if we stop or slow down. I also like to bring MICROspikes for traction on icy trails but they may not be needed. This is a great chance to check out our winter gear on a physically challenging but non-technical route.

Carpool: We will carpool from the Top Foods Parking lot to the trailhead. We leave on time and do not wait. However you can call me at[masked] if you are briefly delayed or need last minute directions. Please bring money to reimburse drivers.

Ice Cream: Our early start makes time for coffee and/or ice cream in Hoodsport on our way home.

Passes: Passes are not needed for cars or passengers.

Cross-Post: This meetup has been been posted with both the Olympia Hiking Meetup group and the Olympia Scramblers. Please only RSVP once if you hike/snowshoe/scramble with both groups.

Thanks Maya for catching that. It'd be fun, but no; it's 7 a.m.

Not this time, but I've been up Rose this fall for the sunset then down with my headlamp. Friends have done the same with Ellinor. I'm not sure how I'd feel about doing that with snowshoes unless there was good moonlight, but it's an interesting idea.
