Slieve Donard, Co. Down

  • February 3, 2013 · 10:30 AM

I'm planning a hike up Slieve Donard this Sunday, all are welcome. At 850m it's the tallest peak in the Mournes and the tallest in Ulster. The hike will be steep enough in places, especially towards the summit so a reasonable level of fitness is required for this one. That said, I'm a bit out of shape at the moment so I won't be setting any records myself, I estimate it will take about 5 hours up and down going at a reasonable pace.
Given how much rain we're having lately I recommend bringing full rain gear and a good pair of boots, there might even be a dusting of snow high up so bring warm clothes and a hat and gloves too.
Starting in Donard Car Park in the middle of Newcastle we'll head up into Donard Wood, follow The Glen River along a well defined path and eventually link up with The Mourne Wall which will bring us all the way to the top of Donard. The meeting point will be in Donard Car Park in Newcastle, I'll be driving there from Dundalk so I can't offer any lifts to anyone this time I'm afraid.
Might see you there!

Hi, thanks for the invite but unfortunately I cannot make it tomorrow. I've been there before and it was a great place for a hike. Maybe next time, enjoy :-)

Hi everyone! I'm Esteban and I'm new to this group. Sorry if I didn't introduce myself before. I've been busy lately.
I moved to Ireland a year ago and I've been missing this kind of outdoors activity. Jb Mangaya-ay, can I tag along in your car? Thanks!!!

I'd like to go, but need a lift. If anyone is going from south side (Dart line) or passing Dun Laoghaire and can take a passenger please give me a shout. Thanks!
