Dingle Peninsula, two routes.

  • Feb 16, 2013 · 9:00 AM

Two days hiking on the Dingle Peninsula.

Meeting Point: Cloghane, Co Kerry at 9am (time subject to change) on Saturday, February 16th.

OSI map: Sheet 70 for summits.

I’m booking into the Mount Brandon Hostel in Cloghane for Friday and Saturday nights, 15th and 16th of February.

http://www.mountbrandonhostel.com/

Phone numbers[masked] or 085 1363454. I’ve stayed here on two separate trips and it’s a good spot - central heating, plenty of hot water, en-suite rooms and a good kitchen. The grounds go right down to the sea in Brandon Bay.

Clickable versions of the maps are in the Group Photos Album.

I’m planning to do two routes over the weekend, one of which will be the coastal route from a recce I did last month. Distance 8.5km, ascent 650m.

Starting from Brandon Point, this route follows the undulations of the coast (vertically and horizontally) to the cliffs overlooking the isolated Sauce Creek. There is no track leading down to this bay but it is possible do descend to it. Not on the agenda this time though!

The other day will be a linear mountain route. Distance 12km, ascent 1000m.

Starting at the entrance to the deeply cut glacial Glenahoo river valley, the route follows a track which leads right in to the back of the valley. From here there is a very steep ascent following the line of the cascading watercourse coming down from the mountains above.

The route takes in four summits and from the last one, Stradbally Mountain, descends southwards to find a gap in the cliffs above Lough Cam. This is a gully leading down to the lake and a track to the car park.

The full route is marked in red dots on the map, but in very bad conditions it can be shortened by heading NW from the first summit back down to the entrance to the valley-green dots on map.

Clickable versions of the maps are in the Group Photos Album.

Amazing - sorry to have missed all the excitement

Still in delayed shock I think after our near emergency situation on the mountains on Saturday. People being blown off their feet and having to link arms was scary. Luckily no one panicked and the hastily adjusted route out went smoothly. Had to make sure to keep a firm grip on the map case! The gully descent from the last cliff-ringed plateau was a great finale. Some great scenery on the two routes.

Just noticed the peak where we suffered the hurricane is named 'Binn os Gaoith'...........self fulfilling prophecy ?

  • Ligia Q.

Well, there is something else :-) After surviving a hurricane on the top of the mountains, I can only say that fear and courage strengthens you up!

    February 18, 2013

  • Conor

Great interesting walks and something surprising around every corner. The hurricane was the most extreme element and the views on the coast were the best for me. Thanks for organising Declan.

@ Aaron, you are class man :-) thank a million for all your kindness!

Thanks Declan for keeping us all safe on the hills - it was wild! :-)

I'm so happy to be alive - unforgettable experience to survive a hurricane! Great challenging hikes, with most spectacular views and wonderful photo sessions! Thanks everyone for the best hiking weekend ever :)

Yes it was a great walk on Saturday. It had everything a good walk should have, stunning views, demanding climbs and descents, periods of abject misery and a few near death experiences (joke!).
Not to forget some tasty food, excellent Guinness and of course great company :-)

    Cheers Declan

Stunning walks with great diversity and a lot of challenges. (Glad no one fell off the cliffs during the hurricane challenge.) Especially loved climbing down the waterfall. Good banter in the pub and hostel; was great to catch up with people in the group. Thank you Declan for organising (and everything else) and to the whole group for a nice weekend.

Superb weekend hiking . Two totally different routes, both challenging and full of great features. Thanks Declan for organising and navigating us safely off the mountain on Saturday. I have never experienced such a strong gale!!!!. Lovely welcoming hostel and adjoining bar for pints and eats. Thanks to all the group for a fun weekend

    Hiya Declan,
Am sure this will be a great weekend but I am meeting up with a friend who's over from Berlin and also have to bring my car for the NCT so won't make it unfortunately. Hope y'all have a great weekend though!

    February 15, 2013

  • Aaron

Likewise - last offer to anyone who needs a lift. I will be leaving from the city centre (Baggot Street) tomorrow at about 4pm.

    February 14, 2013

    • Ligia Q.

      Thanks Aaron, see you them!

      1 · February 15, 2013

    • Aaron

Actually it'll be 3.30 to try and get ahead of some traffic!

      February 15, 2013

  • Declan

One thing I forgot to say is that the hostel doesn't take cards so bring cash.
As some people are talking about only doing one day, I should say that the weather will decide which of the two routes we do first. The mountain route will probably be the one for Saturday as that day has the best forecast at the moment.

  • Marco S.

Hey, driving out tomorrow morning (9ish) to do some sight-seeing first. There's free space in my car.

    February 14, 2013

  • Ingrida

I have one free space in my car, if anyone still needs it.

    • Conor

Hi Ingrida, would it suit you to do a pick up beside Connolly station? Is the time confirmed at 4:30?

      February 14, 2013

    • Ingrida

Hi Conor, yes the time is confirmed now. I meet you at Connolly Station at 4.30 tomorrow.

Hi - I will be driving down leaving the city centre (Baggot St) at
1.30pm but won't be heading back until Monday morning - if that suits anyone needing a lift let me know

    February 13, 2013

  • Jochen

I'll be driving down Friday morning, if anyone is still looking for a lift

    February 12, 2013

  • Aaron

Declan, not sure this will affect the trip in any way - but I just saw in the paper that this is on this weekend http://dinglewalkingfestival.com/

    February 11, 2013

    • Declan

Hi Aaron. I just checked out that link to the Dingle Walking Festival. It won't affect us at all though. The routes are different and are all based from Dingle town which is the far side side of the Conor Pass. Apparently there is another group staying in the Mount Brandon hostel. Don't know if it's overspill from the festival or if they're doing their own thing like us, but the numbers should be fairly civilized and it shouldn't be at all crowded.

Unfortunately, I can't make it this time, wish I could. Have a great weekend

    February 9, 2013

    • Aaron

Hi Ligia - see my comment above. Dont know if that suits you?

      February 11, 2013

  • Aaron

Hi - I will most likely be leaving the city centre (baggot street area) at about 4 on the Friday.
Conor, I probably would not want to be leaving any later than 2pm on the Sunday so may not do the walk that day if it suits?

    February 11, 2013

  • Joanna

Hello. I'm driving down on Friday. However I will be leaving Dublin not earlier than 5pm, straight after work. I do not work in town but if the time suits I can pick people from Red Cow Luas stop (red line)
