I'm planning a trip to Carlingford next Sunday to do Slieve Foyle and part of The Tain Trail, all are welcome. This week I'll be up that way so I'll walk the rout but at first glance it doesn't seem too difficult, with regard to distance covered and difficulty I'd say it's about average for our group, maybe 14 or 15 km and a few hours, I'll update this later in the week if I'm wrong.
The rout I have in mind starts in Carlingford village, goes straight up the southern side of Slieve Foyle to the summit at 589m. From here we will walk the length of the mountain and descend the north or north east side to link up with part of The Tain Trail, this is a fairly flat forest path that will lead us back to Carlingford for a nice cuppa or a pint and some seafood.
As always bring suitable hiking boots, not runners, rain gear, warm clothes and a hat and some food and drinks.
Carlingford is about 1.5 hours from Dublin, it's very easy to find, just follow the N1 north and look out for a turn off marked Carlingford, a little past the first turn off for Dundalk, then follow the signs. We'll meet up at the tourist information office on the sea front in the village at 11 am. I hope to see a few of you there!
Ok, I was up on Slieve Foyle today to have a look at the rout. The climb from Carlingford to the summit is harder than I thought, it's very steep in places and you feel every one of the 589m by the time you reach the top. There's no obvious path so you just have to pick your way along. It took me a full hour to reach the top going along as fast as I could so expect at least an hour of hard uphill hiking at the start.
It's going to be wet under foot on Sunday, there's still a lot of snow on top of Slieve Foy but it's melting fast so it'll be wet and slippy in places. The descent, although reasonably short will be slippy and steep in places so be warned. As always on these hikes your safety is your own responsibility.
*** N.B. proper hiking boots are a must. If you have walking poles bring those too. Also bring proper rain gear, there may be some rain on Sunday, it will certainly be a bit cloudy, I hope we'll miss the rain but bring a water proof jacket and trousers just in case.***
Finally, because we have a lot of people signed up for this one, if you change your mind about coming please change your RSVP so that we know. If you change your mind on Sunday morning just send me a text or call me to let me know. Please be on tme, with such a large group it's important to be there and ready to go by 11 am so try to get there a little before then.
