Lugnaquillia via the Fraughan Rock Glen

  • May 5, 2013 · 11:00 AM

MEETING POINT: 11am in the car park of the Glenmalure Lodge Hotel at Drumgoff Crossroads in Glenmalure, http://goo.gl/maps/8QqjR

If coming via Laragh, instead of continuing on to Glendalough, go south on the road beside Lynams pub in the middle of Laragh. This is the R755 signposted Rathdrum, Glenmalure, Arklow. After about 1.4km, take the turn off up to the right, signposted Glenmalure/Aghavannagh (be sure not to miss this turn off as some did on a previous day and ended up in Rathdrum, way off track!). After 7.5km on this scenic road you reach Drumgoff crossroads. Take a left here and the car park is just on the right hand side.

This approach to Lugnaquillia starts in Baravore, a short drive from the Glenmalure Lodge car park, ascending through the Fraughan Rock Glen and then going up through two further hanging valleys to reach the plateau leading to Lugnaquillia, the highest peak in Ireland outside of Kerry. The descent is by Clohernagh, taking a steep grassy ramp leading down to Art's Lough.

Approx 13km with 850m of ascent and descent.

    Hey folks,

Anyone going from the Northside? I fear I am liable to get lost driving on my own (and think I may have been one of the ones who did get lost before when trying to find this place!). If someone is happy to navigate, I don't mind driving (will be coming from Collins Avenue direction) or alternatively, if anyone else is going from the Northside, a lift would be great!

Email me or text me at[masked] if interested....

    Thanks!

  • Fran

Sinead, expect your normal conditions for a hike in Ireland. Hiking boots (which you have), a rucksack with waterproofs, food and water and some spare layers just in case.... Gaiters help to keep water and debris from getting into your boots but they're not essential. Your choice!

Hi all, just wondering what kind of day to expect- is it up to knees in mud/ water? Do we need Gators/ other kind of necessary gear? I have hiking boots but is that enough? Cheers, Sinead...
