Luggala from the east, ascending the gully above Lough Tay.

  • May 18, 2013 · 11:00 AM

Meeting point: Car park of the Coach House Pub in Roundwood Co. Wicklow at 11am.

Check out the photos here from a previous trip by the group: http://www.meetup.com/hiking-302/photos/all_photos/?photoAlbumId=706309

This is a route in one of the most scenic parts of Wicklow, circling around Lough Tay and taking in the summit of Luggala. It's not overly long at around 10km, but there is however one catch: the ascent of Luggala is via the east gully which may not be to everyone's taste.

Whilst not especially difficult, this gully is nonetheless quite steep and in bad weather would be fairly challenging. The approach to the base of the gully is over a boulder field.

The route also crosses the Cloghoge river, which involves clambering over large boulders and slabs of rock. Again this is quite straightforward and in the number of times I've done it, water levels weren't a problem.

Members should consider whether they're comfortable with this sort of terrain before signing up.

Such an enjoyable Saturday hiking...Clear weather, no rain and super visibility..Thanks to all, especially to Declan for guiding with his usual aplomb and to Johanna for the award winning mint brownies . Even the third one was delicious!!!.

A lift in a vintage car, a brownie cake that would make Delia Smith turn green with envy, the satisfaction of having ascended a gully, great company: priceless. For everything else there is Mastercard :)

As this route involves a gully ascent, I've closed the rsvps to keep the group manageable.

I agree with Meetup HQ, I think we're awesome too! Bravo Declan. Bravo.

I can give one person a lift from either Shankill Dart station or Cherrywood Luas stop. Email me.

Meanwhile, seems Meetup HQ thinks we're awesome and sent me a greeting on my profile. Of course someone from another group may say that they recently got the same, but still... Katie

    Hi there,

I would love to join you on this hike, but I don't have a car, so I would need a life from city centre if possible, thank you very much.

    Kind regards
