Strenuous AT Section Backpack

  • Jan 4, 2014 · 7:30 AM

We'll backpack from TN 91 into Damascus, VA. Total mileage for this section is about 23 miles, with reasonable elevation gain/loss. We'll head up early Sat. am. - drive time from S. Charlotte is about 3 hours and we'll have to shuttle to the start point.  Day 1 will be about 13 miles to Abingdon Gap shelter, then we'll have about 10 out Sunday to Damascus. There will be a cost for the shuttle and of course gas for the driver. We will hike at a fairly fast pace to get to the shelter before dark.  Also, it's a small shelter so be prepared to tent.  If temps will be in the low 20's or less, we may come up with an alternative.

I've limited this to 5 people but its possible more can go so if you are interested please sign up on the wait list.

Please do not sign up unless you are a very experienced backpacker.

Additional details will be provided to those who sign up.

Thanks Cathy for orginizing the hike. The snow was fun to hike in. We need another winter hike soon.

Great trip. Hiking 23 miles through the snow in 30 degree temps doesn't sound too enjoyable sitting in front of the keyboard, butIi had a great time. Good section of trail, great company and always a treat to get in the backwoods.

Thanks to Cathy for organizing, Mike for leading/driving and Terry for keeping me in the flock.

Had a great time hiking in the snow and we had a nice window to get it done without it being too cold. A great group and a good time had by all. Thanks Cathy for organizing!
