We haven't done this in a while so its time for us to attend the Black Dog Festival at Chateau Morrisette on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia again. We'll head up there Saturday to attend the festival (info below), camp at Rocky Knob campground Saturday night, head to Mabry Mill for breakfast Sunday am, then do the strenuous Rock Castle Gorge hike.
The campground does not take reservations but we've never had a problem getting spaces there. It's a very nice campground and has bathrooms but no showers. We'll have a potluck dinner Saturday night for all camping.
Details on the Festival are below. Both bands play Americana music and are excellent.
A yearly staple, the Black Dog Wine & Music Festivals gather folks from near and far. The field becomes a big party of music lovers, sun chairs, barefoot dancing and frivolity. Join us in 2012 for amazing new bands, a variety of vendors for shopping, fun foods, lots of vino and sassy sangria! Admission includes music, winery tour, tastings and souvenir wine glass. Tickets are $25. Our season pass for all three festival events is $60 per person. Children and young adults accompanied by an adult admission are admitted at no charge! 11 am to 5 pm. No picnic baskets, or outside food & beverage permitted. Call [masked] for more information about festivals and gazebo rental.

The Black Lillies 11am-1:00 pm
Topping 2009’s best-of lists across the country and winning the Independent Music Awards Vox Pop for Best Album, Americana, it isn’t uncommon for listeners to say this music has taken hold of their soul. The Black Lillies have created their own unique brand of country, roots, rock and blues. It’s earthy and gritty and melancholy in way old mountain music was a century ago, speaking of pain and love and revenge and revelry with such spirit, such genuine celebration and sorrow. www.theblacklillies.com

Two Mountain Heart members, Josh Shilling & Jim VanCleve, host the acclaimed monthly Mountain Heart "That Just Happened" radio show, heard over Nashville's famed WSM-AM 650 and streamed around the world on www.wsmonline.com . Wow, what a great weekend! Everything worked out extremely well and I still can't believe how good the weather was. We totally escaped the predicted storms so were able to really enjoy the music, wine, camping and hiking, finished off by black raspberry ice cream at Mabry Mill. Thanks to MJ for bringing the tent that protected us from the sun (not the rain as expected) and suggesting the ice cream stop!

Great weather for camping and a great group of folks made this a stellar weekend of music, wine, and hiking! Maybe next time the strenuous hike should be before the wine festival? Thanks Cathy for putting it all together.

Kim, I'd go home Saturday night with you if you'd like to carpool.

I'm on the waiting list - this sounds like a great trip, but I would only want to go if I could share a ride and a tent. I could drive - don't own a tent.
