Dayhike Golden Gate Canyon St. park

  • Golden Gate Canyon State Park

Golden Gate Canyon Road & Crawford Gulch Road, Golden, CO (map)

    39.778797 -105.286842

  • I'll meet you at the PnR.
  •

    Ward Road

Address: 4655 Ward Rd., Wheat Ridge

Directions to the park-n-ride: From 44th Ave. & Ward Rd., continue north on Ward Rd. approximately .22 miles, left into the park-n-Ride. We will plan on leaving this park-n-ride at 9:15 am. There is an admission fee into any state park. That's why we are carpooling.

If you are going West on I-70 take the Ward Rd. exit and go straight through the stop light (do not turn left or right) at the bottom and into the PnR.

The hike: We're going to do the Mountain Lion trail loop:

Permitted users: Hikers, horse and mountain bike

    Total distance: 6.7 mile loop

    Usage: High

    Degree of difficulty: Difficult

    Starting elevation: 7,720 feet

    Elevation gain: 1,230 feet

    ADA accessible: No

Comments: Starts at Nott Creek trail head, off Crawford Gulch Road.  The longest trail in the park, Mountain Lion takes you through undulating hills, open meadow, aspen groves, and dense evergreen forests.  At mile .6 a service road provides access to the Burro trail. At mile 1.3  follow a steep spur trail for half a mile to the old quarts quarry. Mountain Lion also passes through the Deer Creek backcountry camping area. Take a detour at the Windy Peak (mile 3.6) or City Lights Ridge (mile 5.4) spur trails for 360-degree views of the surrounding mountains. Buffalo trail intersects Mountain Lion at mile 4.7, providing access to the Forgotten Valley backcountry camping area. A challenging ride or hike, with great pay-offs.

I don't expect the usage to be high this time of year in the middle of the week.

    Bring your lunch.

    Hi Scott,

I will be not be at the carpool - so I assume that we need to get our permit at the visitors center and then proceed to the TH and that the hike will start at 10am. Please correct if you plan on being at the visitors center at 10am and then purchase permits and drive to TH.
    ???

    thanks
