Shadow Mountain hike

Coming from Conifer / Aspen Park take the exit from US285 onto County Hwy 73 toward Evergreen. Pass the turn for Conifer HS and proceed another 0.6 miles to Shadow Mountain Drive. Turn left (west) onto Shadow Mtn Dr. After about 3 miles the name of the road changes to Black Mountain. Wind up and down the hill for 6 miles. You will have passed Upper Maxwell Falls TH area. Turn left into the parking lot for Cub Creek. The street sign says 33500 W Black Mountain Drive.

Coming from Evergreen go south on County Hwy 73 toward Conifer. Turn right onto Brook Forest Road about one mile south of downtown. There is a Cub Creek Park close to the beginning of Brook Forest Rd but it is NOT our trailhead. Pass the Brook Forest Inn after 5.3 miles and proceed south another 1.1 miles to the parking lot for Cub Creek.

beginning elevation: 8,500 ft

highest elevation: 10,500 ft

distance (round trip): 10 miles

subjective difficulty: moderate

time on the trail: 5 hours or so

The trail is in forest mainly and is in good condition though it seems lightly used. This hike is in and out on the same trail. There is a burn area at the top which allows good views to the south and west.

Bring lunch and plenty of water.

You undertake this hike at your own risk.

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
