Rock Creek trailhead to South Ben Tyler trail

  • Jul 6, 2013 · 9:30 AM

Rock Creek trailhead to South Ben Tyler trail

Low elevation: 9,760 ft (South Ben Tyler Trailhead)
High elevation: 12,100
Total round trip mileage: approx 8
Moderate to difficult

Dogs:  Leash only

We tried to get up this trail back in April but we didn't make it up too far before we were postholing up to our Knees (and of course  we didn't think we would need snowshoes) . I'm sure by now all the snow is gone. From what we had experienced this is a nice wooded trail very different from the northern approach.

The Ben Tyler Trail, though not particularly heavily-trodden, is reasonably well-marked and easy to follow through the heavy woods. The hiker will leave the Ben Tyler Trail for a short (less than 1 mile) off-trail segment across mostly open land dotted by isolated trees and willow groves to reach the summit of "Kenosha Peak".

Carpool: For those interested in carpooling lets meet at the Fort Restaurant (19192 Colorado 8, Morrison if you are not familiar where this is please google the directions) we will leave here at 8 am

Directions:

Rock Creek Trailhead (9,750 ft. elevation). take hwy 285 south past Kenosha pass,Turn west on County Road 56 (left) go 7.3 miles on the Lost Park Road (County Road 56) to Forest Road 133. Go left (north) 1 mile to Rock Creek Trailhead.

Sorry to have to change my RSVP. Working overnight on Friday and not sure how bad the drive will be after a few hours of sleep. Better safe than sorry.

Unfortunately I've been having increasing trouble with my back which is really slowing me down; on yesterday's Threemile Creek had me back at the parking lot even after the photographers who were determined to document every bloom. So I'm out :-(

Scratch me from the hike Saturday. I don't normally work Saturdays in the summer but I am this time. Please keep me posted for future hikes.
