Clayton Lake & Iceburg Lake

  • Aug 11, 2012 · 7:30 AM

There has been a lot of talk about this *mysterious* lake. Based on details from a lot of hiking connoisier type folks(Deb and Caver Matt), we have complied some information. I plan on finding it.

We will meet at the 44th and Ward PNR and consolidate for carpool purposes.

Description One:

From the Moffat Tunnel in Rollinsville, So Boulder Creek Trail. You go 1 mile to the split for Forest Lakes. You go what, another half mile or mile to the Crater Lakes turnoff, keep going. I think it's another half mile or so to this spot where a creek crosses the path and you see trail going off to the right. There's no sign. I think that's the turnoff. From there, you go up the valley. Clayton appears to be on the right side of the valley. Then we go up. I think it's like a mile or 1.5 to Iceberg from Clayton. From the top, it looked very do-able. Iceberg is at least 2 lakes.

Description Two:

Take the trail on the north side of the tunnel and hike approximately two miles to the third creek you pass that joins South Boulder Creek. Turn west and hike up the creek about .5 mile to Clayton Lake. Walk around Clayton Lake to the inlet and follow the creek west .5 mile to the fork, follow the north fork another .5 mile to North Iceberg Lake (South Iceberg Lake is .5 mile from the fork following the creeks s. fork). (USGS East Portal Quad).

Stats are 4.5 miles 2640 ft elevation gain but once Once we get there, we are going to explore a bit.

So ON MY HIKES, this is my policy:

Do not change your RSVP from "YES" to "NO" hours from the event. If you change your RSVP within 24 hours of the event, I will mark you as a "no show". If you "no show" on one of my hikes, you will not get preferential attendance on the next event that you "intend" to attend.

In my event descriptions, there is a lot of information: Please read it! If then I missed something, contact me. On the 14er trips, I ask that you contact me. If you do not contact me, I will change your RSVP. On high altitude, I will not hike with someone where I do not know their ability, it is not safe. Other groups, you sign legal waivers, here I ask for an email or phone call.

Going off trail was fun and finding protection from the rain was timely. Good hike even though Iceberg was not meant to be :-) Thanks Kimmy.
