Beloved Bill Bloomquist Birthday Bash(hike)

Carpooling is encouraged so that our crowd does not monopolize the Deer Creek Park lot. Wooly Mammoth lot would work well: I am leaving it to you all to coordinate that.

Getting to the Park: from metro Denver travel south on C470 and exit at Kipling. Go south on Kipling and turn onto Ute Ave which goes west. Follow Ute as it makes a sharp turn to the left and drops into Deer Creek canyon. Go right (west) onto Deer Creek Canyon Road. Go a mile or so (pass South Valley Park and Lockheed Martin on your right) to Grizzly Drive where you turn left. Ascend the hill and pass the fire station. Turn right into the Park. The entrance to the Park is hard to see till you are right there.

There are many hike possibilities. My notion is to hike Meadowlark Tr to Plymouth Creek to Plymouth Mtn Tr (upper part) to Homesteader (my favorite in this park) and rejoin Plymouth Creek and then do Red Mesa Loop. If we do all of that it is 7 miles or so and 1500 feet of elevation. I think we will be hiking three or four hours. For those who seek a more modest hike there are plenty of shorter ones to consider.

Bring plenty of water and lunch for you and Moonpies for me.

The weather guess for this hike is cool and showery or something. Dress in layers.

Celebrate his birthday a few weeks late. His actual birthday is October 27th!!!! Come give Bill a BIG hug and hike with him. This will be co-led by Caver Matt and our famous Deb Stanley-Lamkin.

I never charge for my hikes but THIS time. Please bring a moonpie as payment. Made payable to birthday boy!

It was wonderful, I am a newbe and still getting adjusted to the altitude. I plan on joining another hike very sson because I love being outdoors. After I turned around I did continue for another hour but at a slower pace. It was great Bill and Happy Belated Birthday DD

So happy I could be a part of the celebration! Happy Birthday to our truly *Beloved* Bill! I'm glad I was able to display my new high-tech ventilation pants for you! ha! Also, we often see our fellow hiking friends a few at a time on other hikes, but it was so great to be with so many of you all at once, and to finally meet the ones I've heard so much great things about! :)

I had a wonderful time. Colorado hikers do not mind a little sloppy weather. The MoonPie surprise was heart-warming.

Great hike and lunch. Really good group of people. One of the best hikes I've been on. Bill, maybe you should consider having 2 or 3 birthdays a year.

    Good Morning -

Happy Birthday Bill! Just to clarify, this is different than the hike on Sunday up Deer Mountain? I'm new to the group and am a little confused. Thanks to anyone who can clarify. Jason

Deer Mtn is in Rocky Mtn park some fifty miles from Deer Creek. There are Deer Creeks, Lost Lakes and Galena Mountains scattered all over the state. We do it to confuse newcomers. With considerable success.

Unfortunately I have to cancel out.

Unfortunately I have to cancel out. I hadn't realized that the hike is in Littleton and I live in Florence. However, I will participate in the Bear Creek/Gold Camp hike on Nov. 18.

I will be at the Wooly Mammoth PnR to coordinate that. We will leave this PnR at 7:45. I will lead one of the hikes on this meetup.

The status is, as it always is around this time of year, let's watch the weather. This hike will still happen, it's a matter of where.

Is this likely to be a challenging hike...am just getting used to Denver and altitude. Is it likely to be low-lying?

    November 1, 2012

    • Debbie

This will likely be a foothills hike.. but we won't know until monday.

      November 1, 2012

  • Debbie

Bill B and I are adventuring ( different places). We will decide location and time around Nov 5 when we check the forecast.

Is there a way to start a petition to have Kimmy on this hike?

Since I will be not be at this hike, I will not be taking attendance aka counting "no shows". but I don't think you want to miss this day! It will be sooooo much fun and moonpies galore!

    October 2, 2012

    • Bill B.

Moonpies are available in quantity at Cracker Barrel. They are made of the finest ingredients: white flour, lard, white sugar, corn syrup, marshmallow. BPA is added for texture. BHT is added to make sure that no self-respecting microorganism will even give them a sniff. MSG is in there somewhere, too. Recommended by the ADA.
