Snowshoe Coon Hill

Ward Road

Address: 4655 Ward Rd., Wheat Ridge

Directions to the park-n-ride: From 44th Ave. & Ward Rd., continue north on Ward Rd. approximately .22 miles, left into the park-n-Ride. We will plan on leaving this park-n-ride at 8:45 am.

If you are going West on I-70 take the Ward Rd. exit and go straight through the stop light (do not turn left or right) at the bottom and into the PnR.

Directions to the trailhead. Go West on I-70. Headed West, as soon as you exit the Eisenhower tunnel (the very long tunnel just west of exit 216) the very large parking lot will be on your right. Drive right into it. Hiker's parking will be on your right. There are signs marking it.

The 'hike': The first half mile or so is up hill. After the first switchback it gets a lot easier. If we get all the way up onto the ridge we'll run into the Loveland ski lifts. This is an out and back hike so we can go as far as we like and turn around.

Dogs are welcome.

...Ward Rd. in Wheatridge, 101 Chicago Creek in Idaho Springs, and a hike at Eisenhower tunnel. Could someone clarify> Are the first two destinations for carpools? Thanks.

Actually it's 2.6 miles with an elevation gain of 1,600 ft in elevation gain. I never trust summitpost.org at all. I'm an organizer also and I never trust summitpost.org.

Shaula, it looks like it is about 2 miles round-trip with 1,200 feet of elevation gain. Class 2. See: www.summitpost.org/coon-hill/15390

After some research, it looks like the trail head is on the west side of the Eisenhower-Johnson Tunnel. The parking area is just after exiting the tunnel heading west. So Lisa, it's near the Loveland ski area.

WOW!!! By the directions I thought we were in Dillon!!! How far does Idaho Springs extend to? We'll be passing Idaho Springs, Georgetown and Silverplume. This is going to be a really nice trip.
Don't park too close to the Maintenance Building as the employees get agitated if they don't have a place to park to go to work.

Trailhead directions are confusing. Is the reference to the tunnel just east of Idaho Springs? The map link shows the NF ranger station in Idaho Springs. What ski lifts are near either area?
