Cathedral Spires area hike/scramble

  • Jan 9, 2013 · 10:00 AM

You will need to join the waiting list if you want to go. I must know you and your ability or I will not permit you on this exploratory hike.

We will hike to a rock outcropping west of Cathedral Spires. Cathedral Spires is a relatively new Jeffco Open Space Park. It is immediately north of the River in the S Platte Canyon near Foxton. To reach the trailhead from town drive US285 southbound. Pass through Aspen Park, pass the exit for Evergreen (Hwy73) and then take the exit for Foxton Road / Kennedy Gulch. After the exit drive under the overpass and proceed to southeast-bound Foxton Rd. Go to the end of Foxton Rd (8.2 miles) and turn right onto S Platte River Rd (County Road 96) headed west toward Buffalo Creek and Pine. Drive west along the river for about 2.4 miles to the TH. S Platte River road is hard surfaced but it is winding and narrow.

This will be an exploratory hike. I do not know if there is a trail the whole way to the outcrop. There will certainly be some rock scrambling near the top. We will NOT do any technical climbing. The route is very steep and there may be exposure at the top so I consider this to be a difficult hike.

Beginning location: N39°24.75' W105°15.20 there is a small parking lot and info kiosk at the TH on the north side of the S Platte R road

Beginning elevation: 6543'

Top elevation: 8000'

Elevation gain: 1500' or more

Distance (round trip): 4 miles

Gradient: 20% on average and more in places (really steep)

Time on trail: four hours at least

There will be some snow on the ground in shaded areas so bring traction devices. We will not scramble on snow-covered rocks, however.

You participate in this event at your own risk.
