Announcing a new Meetup for Weekend Hikers...Plus!

What: Calypso Cascades and Ouzell Falls

When: Sunday, October 17,[masked]:00 AM

Where: Calypso Cascades Ouzel Falls
7 Washington St
Allenspark, CO 80510

At the request of some members, we are now heading to Calypso Cascades and Ouzel Falls!!

I have copied some information about the hike below. However, after hiking this yesterday with some friends I have some revisions:

This is a very hilly hike, where will take our usual pace, this will not be a short hike. The mileage will be 8 miles round trip and it says moderate below but it?s definitely on the strenuous side of moderate. I will be taking a smaller group than the usual 40. So that means please be very mindful of your RSVP. Please only RSVP ?YES?, if you are absolutely sure you can attend.

The address above is not the actual address but of closest physical address I could find.

We will be leaving PROMPTLY at 8:30 AM from the Westminster Park-n-ride. 5025 West 88th Place, Westminster, Co 80031

If someone would like to take charge of the south side park-n-ride, please let me know so I can post your information.

If you would like to stop at the natural spring water station, it is on the left hand side before the road takes a curve to the right. Fill up your water bottles with natural spring water. It?s delicious and they kindly ask for donations. But please account for this added stop, the hike will start at 10:00 AM

Directions to Trailhead

From Denver/Boulder, take U.S. 36 to the town of Lyons, turn left on Highway 7. Watch the speed limit signs in Lyons. At the Y intersection in Lyons, turn left on Highway 7 toward Allens Park. About 18.5 miles turn left on Business Route 7/Allens Park. (Don't take the first Business Route 7 into Ferncliffe.) At 0.1 of a mile, turn right on County Road 90 (just before the post office). Travel 1.5 miles to a fork in the road. (There are several, but stay on the main road) At 1.5 miles, take the right fork, travel 0.1 of a mile to the trailhead on your right. There is a sign that says "Allenspark Trailhead."

Length: 8 miles total
Trail Type: Out-and-back
Skill Level: Moderate
Trailhead Elevation: 8,520
Top Elevation: 9,200

Calypso Cascades is a popular destination in Rocky Mountain National Park, but by starting at the Allenspark Trailhead, the hike to the cascades is free from the bustle of crowds until you reach the destination. The trail offers interesting scenery opened by a 1978 forest fire. Interesting trail building, views of Longs Peak and Calypso Cascades. Calypso Cascades are powered by the Cony Creek drainage - fan out across a steep granite cliff face. Ouzel Falls and Ouzel Lake are named for the Ouzel - or Dipper - a small bird that dives into cold mountain streams and 'flies' underwater to catch insects on the bottom.
