Announcing a new Meetup for Weekend Hikers...Plus!

What: Back to the Arsenal or Let's go see the buffalos and fall colors

When: Saturday, October 23,[masked]:00 AM

Where: Rocky Mountain Arsenal
5650 Havana Street Bldg 121
Commerce City, CO 80022

We have some requests to go on the buffalo tour again. The tour starts at 9:30 and we have reservations for 15. The tour lasts 1 1/2 hours. After the tour we can once again walk around the lakes and enjoy the fall colors.

Folks we did this back in the early summer. The tour is worth it. They tell you all about the arsenal and how they are turning it back into a small grass prairie and how the bison are helping with that.

No dogs!!

Directions to the visitors center: Go East on I-70 from downtown Denver. Take exit 280 which is Havana St. Head North to 56th Av. where the gate is.

The refuge: There were few environmental laws before the 1960s, and chemical production at the Arsenal resulted in contamination of soils and groundwater at the site. In 1986, while investigating the extent of the pollution and ways to clean it up, biologists discovered the Arsenal was home to a large population of wintering bald eagles.

The discovery of eagles made people take note of the extensive and healthy wildlife populations throughout the large buffer zone of the Arsenal. While the industrial core of the site was contaminated, deer, prairie dogs, coyotes, and many species of hawks, owls and other birds thrived in the abandoned fields, grasslands and wood lots that had been protected from forty years of urban sprawl and development
