Red Mountain Open Space

Let’s explore the deep crimson and tan rocks, rolling grasslands and sandy washes that await you at the Red Mountain Open Space located north of Ft. Collins! The property lies along the boundary between the mountains and the plains, and provides
habitat to plants and wildlife from both life zones.
We will be doing this hike early due to there is no tree coverage so will be exposed to the sun so please bring hats, sun screen, and plenty of water at least 2 liters, and whatever else you might need to keep you cool. The forecast for this area on Friday is 76 degrees and mostly sunny with South wind 7 to 13 mph with gusts as much as 21mph.
There is not much elevation gain but the scenery is awesome, it will knock your socks off! Bring a lunch we will eat lunch somewhere in Wyoming taking in the view.
Round Trip Length: 10 miles
Approximately 400ft elevation gain
Difficulty: Moderate hike at a pace of 2.5 per hour, there is not much elevation gain but because of the length and the exposure to the sun and heat please be sure that you are fit enough to do this hike.
Hike should take about 4 hours with approximate 1hr 15 minute drive to and from trailhead.

Amazing area. All the years I lived in Fort Collins and I didn't even realize this was out there. We had a nice breeze on a hot day. Great group of people!

We're thinking we're getting there at 9:15 or 9:30, so I'm hoping all our paths cross. It looks like you guys estimated only an hour and 15 minutes from Longmont, but google says one hour and a half for us from FC. So if anyone from the longmont group gets a chance, just shoot us a text and let us know your ETA. Worse comes to worst, Josh and I will do the hike together alone. No biggie. Hope to see you guys at the trailhead.

It is probably easiest if I just meet you at the trailhead. See you there!

Me and my hiking buddy boyfriend Josh will meet you guys at the trailhead. Had we thought ahead and signed up earlier, we could have worked something out with Sandy. We're in FC, so we'll leave here at 7:45. A cell you can reach us at is:[masked]

From Fort Collins: Take State Hwy 1/Terry Lake Rd to CR15 (aka the Waverly turn off) - go north (left) on CR15, turn west (left) on CR78, turn north (right) on CR17, turn west (left) on CR80, turn north (right) on CR19 (pass gravel pit on left), turn left on CR21. Go over several cattle guards, traveling about 7 miles on CR21 which will end at the trailhead parking area. From I-25: Take the Owl Canyon Road exit and head west. Owl Canyon Road is also CR70. Go north (right) on CR15, turn west (left) on CR78, turn north (right) on CR17, turn west (left) on CR80, turn north (right) on CR19 (pass gravel pit on left), turn left on CR21. Go over several cattle guards, traveling about 7 miles on CR21 which will end at the trailhead parking area.

Let me know which way works best for you.

Sandy we are not really going through Ft. Collins, we will taking I-25 to the Owl Canyon Rd exit, has this way is quicker as apposed to going up 287. We should be arriving at TH around[masked]am. We can always take 2 cars if you want to meet us in longmont. Below is the directions, one from Ft Collins (i know that you are very familar with Ft Collins) and the way that we will be going:

It looks like you'll have a full car, so I'll meet you at the trailhead. Which route will you be taking? I've never been there, so if you have a good place to meet in Fort Collins, I could follow you from there.
