Berkeley Hills rambling 14-16miles

An East Bay variety pack with Berkeley stairways, Steam trains, San Pablo Reservoir and UC Campus. To put some elevation in it, we'll do the Clairmont Preserve trail uphill to Grizzly Peak and the Inspiration Point trail from San Pablo Reservoir. The plan is to have lunch a the Marina at the San Pablo Reservoir - full disclosure: I have never taken the Inspiration point trail down to the water, so you'll need to be open minded about lunch spots.

The beginning and the end of the hike will include many of the Berkeley Stairways and our route will be, by design, not necessarily straightforward, but, hopefully, it will be interesting.

9:30 is our leaving time

Bring your lunch as there are no shopping opportunities  along the route or at the reservoir.

EBMUD permit: A permit is needed because part of the hike is in the East Bay MUD. You can get a permit on line at their site - each permit is good for 4 people https://www.ebmud.com/recreation/trail-use-permits/

3/14/14 Lincoln, Ralph, Sarah, Vicky and I have permits which will cover all of us.

Modified boiler plate disclaimer: Fine print on my hikes: Our pace while moving usually averages around 3mph. We stop for lunch. We regroup at trail junctions, but take no rest stops. If you like to take frequent breaks, or if you need to stop and rest on climbs, these hikes probably aren't for you.  If you aren't sure you can keep up, but want to try it, please do. But, out of courtesy to the rest of the group, please bring a map, and volunteer to take a short cut if you find are struggling to keep up.

The stats from my Garmin were 15 miles and 2850 feet of elevation gain.

Thanks, Giulia, for a great hike! It was fun to explore areas that were new to me. I loved joining the staircase walk and the open space areas. My plus 2 say thank you as well!

It's going to be a late lunch at the San Pablo reservoir, so plan for some snacks to have on the road. Also a few of the streets in the Berkeley Hills have no sidewalks but, in general, there is little traffic on them.

Hi Giulia! I have not been to the reservoir before. Does it have a place to purchase food or do we need to pack lunch?

With Jim not on the hike, we are one permit short. I have asked people to update their RSVP to have an accurate count. If Sat. we still need an additional permit, I'll make an additional one with a description that can apply to one of the people I know on the hike.

Another EBMUD permit has turned out, so we are all set again.

I hurt my foot yesterday. (Not on a trail, at the office. The irony.) Unlikely I'll be on it by Sunday, plus you might need timed to line up another EBMUD permit. Sorry, I was really looking forward to discoveries in Berkeley.

Sorry about that Jim - and the insult to get injured at the office too!

    Poles?

    • Giulia

Trail shoes! I'll bring my poles.

Excellent, thanks Jim. Now we are set for the 12 of us.

PERMITS - each permit is for 4 people, so we need 3 for the group. I'll get one, Lincoln had purchased another; a volunteer for the third? it's $10 and valid for 1 year.
