Atalaya before breakfast!

Description: Atalaya

Round Trip Hiking Distance:4.5 miles

Hiking Time: 1 to 1.5 hours
Elevations: 7,540'- 9,121
Gain: 1581'
Rating: Strenuous

I am a morning person. Are you? Let's meet early and hike Atalaya and watch the sun rise over Santa Fe. I hike Atalaya regularly to improve my general fitness and conditioning for longer hikes. Believe me, it works. Let me help you do the same. I prefer a brisk pace, but don't feel intimidated. I never leave anyone behind.

Meeting Place

The upper Atalaya trailhead on Camino Cruz Blanca before Wilderness Gate.

Thanks for sharing photos of the life of a morning person...in case the unlikely transformation occurs in me becoming one.

No problem. I do things later in the day as well. Check out my classes at Casa de Tres Lunas: Santa Fe's Best Bike Ride, Prep for Colorado Fourteeners and Backpacking the Escalante Trail in the Grand Canyon. And there are more to come.

What a great morning. I woke up to rain, but the storm broke right before I began the hike. Great views on top.

Is it ok to bring dogs? I have 2 well behaved medium hounds, and they like to be off leash once we are out of the residential zones.

Unfortunately, I can't make it on Thursday so I'm planning on doing it on my own on a Saturday or Sunday. I can see the parking lot on my Google map on my phone. Is the trail obvious from there? Will there be a definite end point? Thanks!
