Red Dot/Blue Dot loop in White Rock

Description: Blue/Red Dot Trail
Hiking time: ~ 5 hrs
Driving Time: About 45 min each way
Elevation Range: 5400' - 6400'
Elevation Change: 1000'
R/T Distance: ~ 6 miles

It is a good time to do this hike. We will start from the Blue Dot Trail at Overlook Park in White Rock. Then hike south along the mesa top to the trail head for Red Dot. Descend Red Dot trail into the canyon and hike along the Rio Grande upstream to the Blue Dot and ascend to the starting point. We will have lunch/snack by the small pond waterfall.

This is rated moderate because the Red and Blue Dot trails are steep and rocky with an elevation change of 900' in 1 mile.

What to bring: Dress in light layers. But, this time of year be prepared for sudden changes in weather.
- water, always, of course
- snack/lunch
- poles, if you have them.

Directions:

We will meet outside Java Joe's and car pool from Java Joe's to the the trail head in White Rock. If you are running a late or lost call Dave's cell[masked]-7557.

Gaiters were useful going to Nambe Lake today. Blazed the trail all the way to the lake. Did not see a soul had it all to ourselves. Very nice, peaceful….except for the cold wind.

Michael and Tom. Is there enough snow to snowshoe up high?

    • Michael

No, not last Sunday. Who can guess after any snow last night, though...

Last week, going up to Deception, gaiters were an unnecessary nicety; today, bushwhacking up to Ravens Ridge from the Ski area, they were a 50-50 sort of thing. Next week, if the occasional precip we've been having keeps up, they'll be pretty useful to have with you! Wintertime is coming. :-)
Hope you had a nice hike.

    Hi Dave,

The Sierra Club book says the hike is 7.5 miles. Are we going a different route? I'm up for it, whatever it is.

The Sierra Club version goes up to the end of Parjarito cyn and around which is not necessary. It can be easily traversed closer to the Red Dot trail head.

I still have my heart set on going to Abiquiu to hike this weekend. If anyone wants to join me, let me know. Thinking of doing the Box Canyon at Ghost Ranch.

Been in Kentucky for 12 days and so glad to be home! Really missed hiking with you all. AND, the lower elevation on this hike will help me readjust! See you soon! (Did some very pretty hikes in Kentucky, though!)
