Caballo Peak

Description: Caballo Peak
Hiking time: ~ 7-8 hrs
Driving Time: About 1 hour + each way
Elevation Range: 8600' - 10,450'
Elevation Change: 3800'
R/T Distance: ~ 15 miles
Overall Rating: Advanced

This is a hike right out of the Day Hikes in Santa Fe book. Thought it would be fun to go somewhere new and check it out. It is an exploratory hike since I've never been but have directions, map and Gps and should be fairly easy to follow

This out and back hike begins in the Pajarito ski area in Los Alamos. Sounds like there are great overlooks and views of the Valle Caldera along the way and a panoramic view from the top of Caballo Peak. The terrain is varied

What to bring: Dress in layers. This time of year be prepared for sudden changes in weather and also changes with elevation gain
- water, always, of course
- snack/lunch
- headlamp or flashlight is mandatory but I expect to be to the cars by 5 or 5:30

- traction devices would be a good idea, just in case

Directions:

We will meet in the parking lot west of the Office Depot parking area. Look for my red jeep wrangler. We will carpool to the the trail head. If you are running a late or lost call Z[masked]-0313.

I am grateful that I was in good company on this trip. My boot have finally died and are lying in a landfill somewhere in Santa Fe County :'-(

We had a great day even though we didnt make it to the peak. The book was completely off on the trail and we missed it and went an adventurous and time consuming way instead. Breathtaking views of the Caldera along the way. We'll repeat this in the spring after the snow melts to get to the top now that we know the way. Dutch and Dan were amazing pole rescuers. We had alot of fun and it was a beautiful day. Dan also survived his initiation into the group with flying colors

Z--This area burned last year. Have a good exploration, but be prepared for slash and debris, particularly in the canyon bottom. Trail may be gone, especially down there.
