View Spring Marsh Birds and Hawks

Join us to look for marsh birds at Lane’s Landing in the Muskegon State Game Area. We might be a bit early, but Swamp Sparrows should be on territory in the marsh and rails should be in the area by this date. After checking out the marsh, we’ll see how the winds blows and either head over to the Muskegon Wastewater to check out the waterfowl or head to Grand Haven to check out Harbor Island and hawk watch locations to look for migrating hawks. At the Wastewater, Northern Shoveler and Ruddy Duck are likely; in Grand Haven, we could see Caspian Tern on Lake Michigan or a Peregrine Falcon at the power plant. Birders of all skills are welcome.

Leader: Steve Minard

Essentials: Meet at the Boy Scout Headquarters west off Walker Avenue NW (exit 28) just north of I-96 at 7:00 AM. We plan to bird until noon. You may want to bring a snack to hold you over until lunch.

It was my first time with this group. The Audubon group was very helpful in identifying birds that I would never be able to id. The Waste Water Treatment plant offered some great birding from the car during the snow. Thanks so much.

I must admit I had my doubts about getting up so early on a cold and snowy Saturday but it was so worth it! We saw bald headed eagles and more than 25 other kinds of birds including the secretive Virginia Rail! Thanks to Steve and Phil for sharing their wealth of knowledge. The weather was cold but the experience was warm.

Sorry, no sleep all week and my bed is calling me so I am going to pass on this one. Hope you do it again when I have a chance of staying awake!

I will meet you at the Boy Scout Headquarters. This will be my first bird walk since I moved to Grand Rapids (except for the Owl Prowl) Looking forward to it. Thanks Lynn!

We will get to Lane's Landing, which is at the Muskegon State Game Area, at 7:45. You may not know where that is. I just spoke to Steve Minard and he said that you could give him a call for better directions. His #[masked]

Will you be birding at the Boy Scout Headquarters or just meeting there? I would be coming from Holland and if we are birding in Muskegon would rather meet there.

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
