Winter Car Camp at Pine Point Campground, Allegan MI

Let's do a weekend winter car camping trip.
If you have never camped in the winter, this is your opportunity to do it close to home.
If you have experienced the fun of winter camping, this is an opportunity to do it again!

Pine Point Campground in Allegan County has 35 primitive campsites, pump water and vault toilets.

Campsites are $12.00 per night, which would be shared by 2-3 tents.
Check out is 3:00 pm Sunday.

The campground has immediate access to many miles of hiking trails in the Allegan State Game Area, so bring your hiking boots, snowshoes or cross country skis.

A campfire should be going all day long to cook over, warm up with, and gather around to solve all the world's problems.

We will have a day hike around Swan Creek Pond, (hopefully we can use snowshoes), and do some night hikes again.

Here is a link to the park with directions, and maps of the campground:
http://www.allegancounty.org/Government/PD/Parks/PinePoint.asp?pt=government

Bring your tent and sleeping bag and let's have a fun weekend!

Bring an armload of firewood to contribute to the fire please.

My first Group winter camping outing.... seemed more like a Christmas Holiday without electricity. Everyone brought out their best dishes and dressed up for the occasion! Cheers!

Lots of snow around the picnic tables, fire pit, walkway to road and toilet, etc to move. Every one should bring a snow shovel. Who has a snowblower they can bring????????

I'm at the campground now. Plow came again this morning. VERY well done, with turnouts plowed for car parking. No worries getting in.

Let me remind you guys no one believed I could use a hammock for winter camping and I proved people wrong and was toasty and comfortable the whole time. Now I have 2 down under quilts and a third at my feet. I have 3 sleeping bags. I have a special apparatus for hanging my hot water bottles for warming the hammock. If anything we will be too warm! My biggest thing right now is food. Gotta get it today before I go in to work for 2nd shift. A couple days ago I got a couple cases of toe and hand warmers from Dunhams. For around the fire I have an old rectangular sleeping bag to have over us while sitting. I have enough warm layers for both of us without straining things. I have so much stuff it's silly.

I can't wait to see the final count who shows up for this ;)

    January 24, 2014

  • Tony C.

The winds will be strong! I'm bringing a 20x20 dining fly that we can drop down one side to block the wind and still have a fire on the underside. Hoping to put my tent up in the back corner and still have a nice place for us to hangout by the fire. (I spent 3 nights in a snow cave at 17,000' in Alaska where it never got above -15 degrees, if we stay out of the wind we can do this and live to tell about it!)

Lea and I have tested being in the hammock before just not with tons of down until yesterday. I have a sound system and it will handle us fine. My hammock isn't considered 2 person but it is 11' long and like 5' wide it was made by a guy on hammock forums. If for some reason what I have isn't working we can bail to the car with but loads of downy goodness. Trust me I have backup plans in place but like Lea said I don't want to be on the ground. Let me handle it. I got this and won't let anything bad happen to either of us

Hey Kevin, regarding the frozen boots, I'm sure you've heard of the vapor barrier liner…put on a pair of liner socks, then a plastic bread bag, then your wool socks over the plastic bag. Then put on your boots. Your boots will be cold in the morning but not frozen because they won't have sweat in them…the vapor barrier prevents that.

I am trying to get some epicurean, gastronomical delights planned for this event, and a firm head count will be very helpful. Please update your RSVP here, by posting a simple 'YES' on the site here, so I know how many to plan for. (Remember to bring firewood...). Thanks

Lisa, this outing is planned as a 2 -DAY WEEKEND event, not a Saturday only event. I don't want people to show up and leave at random times, and picking and choosing what they do or don't want to show up for. I am sorry, but the event is NOT open for people who just want to come for part of a day or so. (This was explained in the email I sent everyone on January 8.) That just breeds chaos, and it isn't fair to everyone else who will be working very hard to make it a good weekend. If you can't commit to being there as it is scheduled, and do at least 1 overnight with us, maybe you can join us in February. Let me know, and I'll be sure to add you to the list for next month if you wish. Thanks for understanding.

Thank you for letting me know how you felt. I am sorry for not being more considerate. I did not know this event is only open for people who want to stay overnight. I know I will regret because I will miss out on another unforgettable outing you have planned for us. I hope I will be more prepared and join you next time. Have a great fun!

Deboer says the winds this weekend will be "relentlous", and there are blizzard warnings in the plains states from this system. Bring it!

    A few updates:
    1. Yes, the weekend temperatures might be a bit cooler this weekend than a July weekend. Pack smart, bring layers, and add an extra blanket or 2. Hot drinks will be a must, so bring plenty (tea, coffee, cocoa, etc).
    2. Wood for the fire - remember to bring it if you want to stay warm. Don't be that 1 person who doesn't contribute your fair share to the wood pile.
    3. I will be bringing a saw and ax, in case we need to gather more wood from the campground. If anyone else has another ax or saw to bring, that may be helpful. Many hands make light work.
    4. Who has a plastic toboggan they can bring? It might help with gathering wood.
    5. I've contacted the Allegan Co Parks Dept, and they have agreed to bring a blade through the campground by Thursday, so it should be plowed for us, with parking for a couple dozen vehicles.

      .
      6. There will be a VERY nice breakfast provided for everyone on Saturday morning around 9:30am. Also, Saturday night you may be surprised with some fun, and really cool deserts. You won't want to miss either of them! (Thanks in advance to Pat, Greg, and Randy for your critical contributions!)
      7. I'm not certain which group site we will be on. It will depend on what it looks like when I get there on Friday, and how the snowplowing and parking situation is for the vehicles.
      8. If you get really cold, let someone know. It sucks tripping over lost frozen fingertips and earlobes in the snow.
      9. Unless you enjoy donating (losing) 'lip meat', winter is a great time for using plastic eating utensils, rather than steel/aluminum/titanium ones. Looking forward to a great weekend!
