2nd Annual, Section 11, Frozen Butt, Insane Winter Camping - Hamilton, MI

(formerly: Winter Car Camping at Silver Creek County Park)

Let's do another weekend winter car camping trip!
Last year we had a great time here with a really cool group.

If you have never camped in the winter, this is your opportunity to do it close to home.
If you have experienced the fun of winter camping, this is another opportunity to do it again!

We will be tent camping / hammock hanging for 2 nights.

Silver Creek Co. Campground has over 25 miles of hiking trails..
There are 75 campsites in the park, and also has 450 feet of frontage on Silver Creek, which is a spring fed trout stream.

Pump water and vault toilets are available.

Campsites are $12.00 per night.
Check out is 3:00 pm Sunday.

The campground has immediate access to the hiking trails, so bring your hiking boots, snowshoes or cross country skis.

A campfire should be going all day long to cook over and warm up with.

There will be an organized day hike on Saturday, and a Saturday evening night hike.

Here is a link to the park with directions, and maps of the campground:
http://www.allegancounty.org/Government/PD/Parks/SilverCreek.asp?pt=government

Please bring your fair share of firewood to contribute. Also, this year I think it would cool to have a potluck dinner Saturday evening around the campfire, so plan to bring a dish to prepare or heat up.

Bring your tent, sleeping bag and a snow shovel, and let's have a fun weekend!

Oh,,, and hope for a foot or more of FRESH SNOW!!

My friend and I made it out to Silver Creek on Friday at 3:00 and realized the entries were inaccessible (and eventually that the event was cancelled). We had came too far to turn back so we talked to the owner of the dairy farm across the street and he let us park in his driveway (though reluctantly and only for Friday night). From there we threw on our snowshoes and hiked into the park and set up camp. We had the park all to ourselves with the exception of a few whitetails. Sorry we didn't have the opportunity to meet and enjoy a meal over the fire. Looking forward to meeting up next time!

Brad was unable to contact me on Friday and I arrived at Silver Creek shortly before 4:30 only to find the drive snowfilled. Had I known some brave souls had trekked in I too would have ventured into the woods for the adventure!!

Here is an option: Fort Custer State Park is open. It is in Augusta, about 15-20 minutes EAST of Kalamazoo. Roads are open and plowed. I don't think tonight would be a good night to head down there, given the traffic conditions on US131. But, we could head there tomorrow for a 1-nighter,,,???

I am stepping outta this one too. I just started working again in January and I am broke. There was an option to make money and be trained for more things at work making me a bit more valuable to the company. I am working thru a temp agency so yea. Choosing to work on getting away from the empty bank account. Sorry. Have fun.

Yea we can't have my replacement show me up in person. Still I hope Kev does me the honor of doing the photo documenting well. :)

I heard that upsetting the space time continuum will increase snowfall. I dunno, could be a rumor.

I just heard an actual weather forecast for later this week. "A weather system will come from Siberia, pass through the North Pole and come straight into Michigan."
I laughed then I cried...yes I live in a place that is in the same conversation as Siberia and the North Pole.

The event is canceled. The recent weather conditions have shut both entrances, and the County won't have time to open them. Hope y'all get this in time.

Cooler winter weather is quickly pushing this warm front out of here, and temps will be back to normal. Could get some fresh snow tomorrow, and then a very nice weekend shaping up for us. If anyone needs to reach me after NOON tomorrow, I can be reached at[masked] 2237. Looking forward to a great weekend!

Right now, I won't arrive till Saturday morning; anyone want to car pool Saturday AM-Noonish to Hamlin, and maybe also share a Site for camping.

All of us will be on a couple adjacent sites, so it will feel like a group site. There will be room for ya.

I unfortunately I will have to withdraw this coming weekend. There has been a change in my work schedule that doesn't allow me to make it. I hope everyone has a great time and look forward to pictures.

    • Brad

Thanks for the update, Adam. See you at Nordhouse in a couple of weeks!

I am planning on bringing my water kettle to have water hot over the fire. It would be nice if everyone could bring a couple of gallons of water to keep the pot filled.

  • Steve (Stephen) S.

Is there a 'Rain Date' for this event? I can deal with copious amounts of snow and single digit temps - even sub-zero temps - but I'm not that good with 40 degrees and rain....

    February 16, 2014

    • Steve (Stephen) S.

Indeed, it looks like the projected high temps have dropped significantly from what the forecasts were just a few days ago.

      February 16, 2014

    • Brad

And firewood. Yes, the firewood, don't forget to bring that!!

      1 · February 16, 2014

Still planning to attend and REALLY lookin' forward to it, but likely won't be there until 5:00 PM or thereabouts.
Doing the 'Grandpa' thing at my grandson's school at 3:00 PM., then directly to the campsite!!

I have just changed my RSVP to not going so a spot is now available for Brad to fill. I have been having some health issues dealing with my lungs for some time that may not be resolved until early March. So you car campers have an extra good time and take a lot of pictures.

We had a great time at January's Winter Camping event. Given the amount of recent snowfall, it is HIGHLY ADVISED everyone brings a shovel. You will need it to shovel a place for your tent, and a walkway to it. If anyone has a snowblower they could bring, that will be VERY helpful!

Is this are accessible for a four wheeler with a plow? I could bring mine if needed.

      1 · February 5, 2014

    • Brad

Yes it is, and I'm planning to get the campground road plowed like last time. Keep fingers crossed.

Sadly, I must back out. Have a great time!

Sorry I have to cancel. I had a hard choice to make wonderful winter camping or a free weekend atvtje Amway Grand for a marriage conference. My marriage is first.
