Holiday Hike Challenge - Land Conservancy of West Michigan

On December 14 we will be visiting the Nature Preserve in NE Grand Rapids and the three in Rockford. The trails in the Nature Preserves only seem to be about a mile in length so we can easily handle multiple locations in one day. If you would like to carpool plan on meeting at the West River Drive park-n-ride off 131 at 10am.

From the Land Conservancy of West Michigan website: http://www.naturenearby.org/th_event/holiday-hike-challenge-2/

We invite you to get outside this holiday season and explore nature with families and friends. At 12 of our nature preserves, we will be decorating a tree with a bright red bow, in the spirit of the holiday season. Find the bow, send us a photo, and be entered to win prizes.

The challenge runs from December 14, 2013 to January 13, 2014.

Instructions

Hike: Walk the trails at our preserves and locate the tree with the red bow.

Photograph: Take a picture of yourself, a family member, or friend next to the decorated tree.

Email: Please use the subject line “Holiday Hike Challenge,” include your contact information, and email us your photo.

Bonus: Identify the species of the decorated tree for an additional chance to win.

Prizes

Grand prize: A $100 gift card to the Gilmore Collection Restaurants will be awarded to the first person to send in pictures from all 12 nature preserves.

Drawing: All photo submissions will be entered into a drawing for additional prizes including gift cards from Forest Hills Foods and Wild Birds Unlimited.  Participants do not need to visit all preserves to be eligible.

It was fun except couldn't find the trail when we went to the Maas preserve. There was no sign like at the other preserves we went to and we ended up skipping it. Saul lake should have a sign on the road because it actually looks like and is a persons driveway you take to get to parking area. Brower Lake preserve has no parking lot. You have to park on side of road. The preserves should be marked in some cases and in others marked more clearly. We were not familiar with any of them and with the snow it definitely was a challenge to stay on or find the trail in some cases.

It was fun, but it only gets 4 stars because we couldn't find the fourth location!

There appeared to be another parking area to the East, nearer to the White Pine Trail. I bet that is where we were looking for.

Yah we were looking at that too as we drove by.

Beautiful places so close to home. Thank you to all you troopers who braved the weather to hunt for the preserves.

Hey Kelly, do you have any idea how long you were planning on being gone. I would like to carpool but would like to be back home by 2. I have a lot of holiday baking to do! :)

It is hard to determine how long it is going to take to move 15 people through four different locations. You may want to follow instead of carpool so that you can leave when you want.

I lived by one, am living by the second, hiked the third last weekend and live in the town with the fourth; but alas, this is full.…the second I got the notification on my tablet.

I don't announce when I post a new hike on the site unless i post it last minute. When you get the notification it is because Meetup automatically sends one the day before the event. That is why you keep finding some events full. Many of the other organizers also do not announce their hikes when they put them on the site. We feel we have enough regular traffic on the site that we don't need to announce everything and I don't want to blast members with emails all the time.

Kelly, Which nature preserve are we starting with? Some of us are not meeting at the carpool site. Thanks!

    December 11, 2013

    • Kelly

We will be starting at Lamberton, then Saul Lake, then Brower Lake and finally Maas Family Nature Preserve. Sorry I can't give times after the first one because I don't know how long we will be at each one.

I took myself off the wait list for this but I hope one of you win!

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
