BACKPACK the NCT - Timber Creek Campground to Nichols Lake

Please read and understand the entire event details before signing up.

THE PLAN:

Backpack a 28 mile stretch of the NCT (North Country Trail) from the Timber Creek National Forest Campground SOUTH to the Nichols Lake Trailhead. The ***starting trailhead*** lies within the Timber Creek Campground on HWY US 10, and is 7.5 miles WEST of M-37, NORTH of Baldwin.

NOTE:
***THIS IS THE LOCATION OF THE TRAILHEAD WHERE WE WILL BE STARTING THE HIKE at 9:00am.

***WE WILL ACTUALLY MEET FIRST AT NICHOLS LAKE TRAILHEAD at 8:30am TO SPOT VEHICLES, THEN DRIVE TO THE TRAILHEAD TO START THE HIKE BY 9:00am.

We would start the hike FRIDAY morning by 9:00am after we have spotted vehicles, and BACKPACK approximately 9 miles on FRIDAY, and camp FRIDAY night either in or near Bowman Bridge National Forest Campground (depending on campsite availability).

SATURDAY we will continue to head SOUTH and BACKPACK approximately 11 miles, making camp somewhere between 96th Street and 16 Mile Road. This will be a backcountry camp site.

SUNDAY we will finish the remaining 9 miles of the trip, ending at the Nichols Lake Trailhead.

Since this is a linear (1-way) hike, we will need to spot a couple of vehicles at the Nichols Lake Trailhead. This will need to be done before we start the hike at 9:00am FRIDAY so we can get a good start to our day.

BECAUSE OF THIS, WE WILL ALL MEET FRIDAY 8:30 am AT THE NICHOLS LAKE TRAILHEAD. WE WILL DROP CARS THERE, AND THEN DRIVE NORTH TO OUR STARTING POINT.

Please understand that this is NOT camping with dayhikes. Everything that you need to survive for 3 days must be carried on your back. The usual backpacking gear for a trip like this include:

Backpack, tent / shelter,
sleeping bag / sleeping pad,
cooking gear / fuel,
food / snacks,
water bottles & purification,
weather appropriate clothing,
First Aid Kit,
fire starter,
headlamp / flashlight,
and personal essentials.

MEETING LOCATION FOR FRIDAY 8:30am:
Nichols Lake National Forest Campground

Directions to Nichols Lake Campground:
From White Cloud, take M-37 NORTH approximately 11 miles to 11 MILE ROAD.
Turn WEST on 11 MILE ROAD and go approximately 4 miles to the Nichols Lake Campground. The entrance will be on your right. The meeting location will be the Trailhead located in the parking area for the campgrounds boat launch.

There may be a day use fee of $5.00 for vehicles at the Timber Creek trailhead, and Bowman Bridge campsites are $16.00 per site. We can double up on sites, if we can stay there.

It was a great trip, and I didn't realize till the third day that the challenges were an opportunity to grow. I, however, did get caught up in my battle with the heat, and my personnel aches and pains.....and as a result may not have been the best person to hike with at times on this trip....hope no one took offense, none was intended.

What a great feeling of accomplishment, we beat the heat and hiked a great distance. Support of fellow hikers is the only reason we made to our planned destination.

WOW,,, what a weekend! Long 2nd day and everyone kicked Mother Nature in the teeth. Great example of team cooperation and perseverance. We should all be proud of the accomplishment!

Once again Brad was full of surprises. First the soda then the smores and we can't forget the BIG miles the second day. Is this your first meetup with hitching a ride? It was a feat trip and it was nice all the extras Brad invited. The mosquitoes enjoyed our company. Great people great time and love the conversations.

I'm coming up after 3p. Bringing the dog and parking at Upper Branch Bridge Access. It is about 3 miles west and south of Timber Creek and will shave 3.1 of hiking distance. Does anyone mind transporting the few extra miles or the dog? If s, I can tie the dog up at Nichol's Lake with some water. See you then.

I am willing to car pool. Shall we meet at the car pool lot across from 5/3 ball park at what time on Friday morning? I can drive and take one passenger.
