Pictured Rocks in the U.P.

Let's spend a long weekend in the Upper Peninsula at Pictured Rocks!!

I think I am going to go with Otter Lake Campground as our base site. $20/site/night, two-three tents per site. Four sites have been reserved for two-three tents per site. Total cost divided by 13 will be $20 for your weekend accomodations. (Don't try to do the math, I got some special pricing.) Campground said that we can pay when we arrive. I will plan on paying the whole thing and you can pay me individually.

Campground site: http://www.exploringthenorth.com/otterlake/campground.html

Lake access, activities on the grounds, modern bathrooms, hot showers, laundry.

Campground map: http://playatotterlake.com/finalmap.pdf

We have sites G8, 9, 10 and 11.

This is what I am planning on doing at this point:

Thursday: Arrive at campground sometime during the afternoon. Pictured Rocks Cruise from Munising 5pm (3 hr cruise, adults $35)

Friday: Day hike in Pictured Rocks National Park: Au Sable Point/Log Slide. Highlights: Terraced bedrock, shipwrecks, lighthouse, historic log slide, sweeping high views of Lake Superior and huge sand dunes. Distance: 7 miles. Difficulty: moderate.

Saturday: Drive around to a hand full of walk-in hikes to view waterfalls in the area.

Sunday: Day hike in Pictured Rocks National Park: Chapel Hill Loop. Highlights: Pictured Rocks Cliffs, Grand Portal Point, Chapel Rock, Chapel Falls, Mosquito Falls. Distance: 10.5 miles. Difficulty: moderate.

I encourage you to do research on the area. You do not have to do what I have posted. Feel free to use the campground as a home base during the weekend and create your own vacation.

WOW, that is all I have the mental capacity to say..... Good people, good time in God's creation, I truly enjoyed every part of it. Thank you to all. Alyson, thank you for helping me with my tent. I would probably still be putting it up.

I had a wonderful time, especially considering that I am so new to the group! Everyone was so friendly and accepting. The whole group, even though very diverse, really clicked!

Is there anyone who has extra room in a tent? I was going to purchase a single person tent, but wanted to save all the money I can! (: also, I'm coming from Marshall, MI, so are there any carpool options?

I have never been to this campground but I asked him to give me sites that can fit 3 average size tents per site. Meals are when ever you want, nothing scheduled.

I am so excited a spot has opened for me! I have been unable to go on any of the weekend hikes due to my work schedule and would like to get to know some of the people who are going. Would anyone like to meet up some week day morning for coffee or afternoon for a drink to talk about the trip and give me a chance to meet some people a head of time. Let me know if anyone is interested! Thanks!

Thanks John. I was going to post a word of caution to the kayakers.

Safety warning if you kayak pictured rocks. Lake Superior can become huge waves in a short time. There are very few put in areas, only rocks to have waves slam you against. I recommend having a portable VHF or something to get NOAH to keep track of the weather. Also you should use a kayak at least 12.5 feet long, preferably 17 or 18 feet and know how to kayak waves. Practice rollovers ahead of time on Lake Michigan in the waves and speed getting back in. If weather cooperates, super experience!

Stephanie - I'll be at the sleeping bear dunes camping/kayaking event this weekend. I MAY leave saturday afternoon though for an event in detroit. Not sure yet. Regardless, we can do some chatting this weekend. :-)

Going to be doing some research for this event this weekend and will get some details posted soon. Feel free to do your own research as well. You don't have to do the trails or attractions that I post while you are up there, you can camp with the group but go do other things with smaller groups from the group. ( : I am hoping some of the other organizers in the group will start posting some hiking opportunities now that the weather is getting nicer.

Yes Jill there are some planned ahead of time. Check out others on the main page. I believe a beach hike is set up for ahead of time. You can arrange for car pooling here on the page cause we do usually meet at the location that is chosen. No location has been chosen just yet it seems to me.

I am just new to the group but would love to go to Picture Rocks with you. How do you meet up? Does everyone meet up there or do we carpool? I would like to get to know some of the members in the group ahead of time. Are any day trips planned?

I'll be at the dunegrass music festival in sleeping bear dunes for my annual vacation july 26-29 (probably getting a hotel in tc monday night), bringing my kayaks, meeting up with the gold coast kayaking club, and would be interested in a day hike as well... I'll be looking for more info...
Stephanie - look up the gold cost kayaking club (on meetup) or get a hold of me if you'll be in that area and looking for some fun rivers and/or pictured rocks by water

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
