Yankee Springs Recreation Area Day Hike

The park consists of over 5000 acres of diverse terrain, 15 miles of hiking trails and 9 lakes. We are planning on doing the Sassafras Trail and the Long Lake Trail up to the Devil's Soup Bowl and back for a total of approximately 7 miles. This would be rated as a moderate hike at a brisk pace, which is 2.5 - 3 miles per hour.

Bring water and a snack with you.  Wear layers of synthetic clothing, to keep you comfortable in various temperatures, and comfortable shoes.

Please meet us at the state park campground parking lot, off of Gun Lake Road at 10:00am if you would like to join us.

Turned out to be a beautiful day for a walk in the woods with a wonderful group of hikers. The 7.2 miles flew by!

Perfect distance and it took less than 3 hours out of my Saturday. Thanks Tim and Carol!

Looking forward to this but if it is raining in the AM, I won't be attending.

Sorry for the confusion...Pete started a shorter hike and he said he schueduled it for 11 am. When I checked the site I saw that this one said 11am. So I corrected this back to 10am and updated Pete's to the 11am he stated.

Just want to give everyone a "heads up". It is active hunting season, so wear some orange if you have it.

Hiked this trail last weekend, still a few leaves on the trees. Believe it or not there are still ticks out in the woods here. Even after the few freezes we've had. My dog came home sporting a couple so my warning to you is be careful and stay on the path cuz otherwise you might bring home a few unwelcome souvenirs.

Thanks for the warning. Is there any ointment to put on to ward off the ticks?

The distance, size and pace of a hike is at the discretion of the kind people willing to coordinate events for this group. Please do NOT try to modify the elements of a scheduled hike without coordinating with the organizers of the hike. If another hiker(s) would like to lead a modified version of this hike with different mileage, different time or different day, please use the suggested hike area and post it as a separate hike.

    Thank you.

Is anyone interested in carpooling? How about meeting outside Schuler's bookstore on the Alpine, across Star theater?

I would love to carpool meeting at Schulers. I am new to Grand Rapids and have never been to Yankee Springs. What time would we need to meet to get there on time?
