Let's Meetup and Hike Pigeon Creek Day Hike

Pigeon Creek Park is conveniently located between Grand Rapids, Holland and Muskegon. It is roughly 10 miles NE of Holland, close to 120th Ave and Fillmore St.

With 10 miles of looped trails to hike, we can plan many different routes.
Bring water and snacks, and maybe a thermos of coffee or hot chocolate for an after-hike warmup by the Lodge.

Tucked away in the middle of the county, this park offers a quiet retreat for the outdoor enthusiast. Pigeon Creek Park is 282 acres with another 130 adjacent acres of County Open Space land.

Over 10 miles of trails wind through old pine plantations, mature deciduous forests and through bottom land forests along the Pigeon River. We will explore and limit the hike to 5 miles round trip. This will give you time in the afternoon to watch whatever games are on or to stop for something for lunch. There is a limit on this hike to 14 hikers.

A map of the park trails, with directions, can be found here:

    RICK H.
I did this route on Wend when I mapped it out. There are more things then being able to read a map for elevation. Sugar Maple Lane is a one one HORSE trail.
You're welcome to leave the group and do your hike.

I was just trying to let Stan know where the big hills are. I did not just "read the map" as you implied. I live nearby and walk my dogs here often. I found out about the group through the All Trails app and wanted to see what it's all about. Figured it would be casual. Just trying to help with information, not get someone angry. :-(

    good morning
tomorrow we explore. each of the sections has a hill of sand. I suggest that you wear shoes that protect your ankles (hiking if you have them) and a stick to aid you going up and down. the upper level trail is nearly at the beginning and over 1/2 mile long. The lower level is about mid hike and it is nearly 1 mile long.
    remember the munchies and water.

Stan, Sharon, and I are carpooling at 9:00 a.m. close to the gas station at Meijier in Standale. This is what I know who are carpooling at NW side. We can take one more person at least to fit four people, if anyone is interested. See you, Stan, Sharon at 9:00. It is going to be a beautiful day even if it rains a little bit! See you.

If you are NOT going tomorrow morning, please put it on this board so we are not waiting for you tomorrow. Will wait only if someone is en-route to the park site and someone knows for sure they are coming.
thanks and see you tomorrow at 10

The easiest is the Upper Level. It is right where we park. the combined hikes are 4.3 miles. The time is up to us as hikers.

    Lynn,
Good morning. This is obviously a large group. thinking of making 2 smaller groups. Noticed that you have led some groups. Would you like to lead one of the smaller groups? As I mentioned already I have written 2 hike routes for the Upper and Lower portions of the park.

with a group this size we'll deal with how we hike. Like I said I've created 2 hike routes-easy(upper park) and moderate(lower park). this combined with the trail maps posted at every stop should put us in good shape.

Sounds like you got a plan go with it should work

Reading this again it says a limit to14 hikers, I am confused about that does that mean 19 people are on standby?

I admit I am a meetup Virgin. This is my first outing for a meetup event. It will be good to do something outdoors I usually go to the gym. I don't tend to do the things I enjoy alone so it will be cool. I have hiked saugatuck dunes many times so I am looking forward to that one too especially if there's some snow on the ground!

I'm not sure if that is a reply Stan but I live in Holland. Is there am easy way to tell a group from meetup is at the location?

      November 28, 2012

    • stan

No this is it just post a comment and people will get it

    Hi Stan,

Nancy and I are carpooling, so if you like, you can join us for carpooling. When should we all meet Meijier at Standale? It is a big parking lot? Perhaps we should all meet closer to the gas station.

    November 28, 2012

    • stan

Nancy is not going now so no anyone else interested. I will keep watching for others interested also

If you are signed up for this hike, and were on the waiting list for the original one on Sunday, would you kindly change your Sunday RSVP to "NO" so people still on the waiting list can attend?
    Thank you.

there is no waiting list. with 33 signed, it does not mean 33 will show.I expect about 20-25.
The hike has 2 parts-Upper and Lower. Upper is easy and under 2 miles. The Lower is moderate and and about 2.4 miles. Letting you all know now, if you have not hiked hills with a sand base get ready for a workout. If you decide not to go that's okay with me.
This is NOT a hiking or walking competition. It is a way to see different areas of this county as you hike different terrains. Of course it also gives you a workout of heart and legs. You are always welcome to take photos-I do it all the time.
