Let's Meetup and Hike at Holland State Park

The way I took to the park was River Rd to Douglas Ave.  Left on Douglas to the beach.  You will drive past the park headquarters to the lot.  The lot has a historic sign that says Holland Harbor.

Park in the lot that  has swings and picnic table.  We will meet there and walk down to the beach past the lighthouse.

The hike will be on the sandy beach to the right.  This is where we will do our miles.  If you have not walked in the sand, it gives your legs and heart a good workout.  You will have a chance to stop and observe the waves, any gulls there and the large beach houses.

HIKE EXPECTATIONS

The purpose of these statements is to minimize your chance of injury. Please read.  These only apply to hikes that I am the hike host.

When you are given a map of the hike route, please follow the map. The map was prepared for a reason to make sure the hike is interesting and you are kept reasonably safe.

When you hike faster than the remainder of the group, you are expected to remain in eyesight of the hike host.

If the hike terrain is not flat level pavement, please dress accordingly.

Suggestions to change the route during the hike must be understood by everyone.

A walk by the beach in a winter day is such a refreshing experience. I am glad I have experienced it. Now I am waiting to experience Holland State Park when the lake is frozen! I love the footprints, seagull in the sky, the sound of waves, the feel of walking on the sand, interaction with other hikers!

Great walk with a great group of people! Turned out to be a great day for a walk. A little chilly at the beginning but definitely warmed up quickly walking on the beach. Thanks for organizing this! My first walk with this group and definitely will not be my last.

Gotcha well I still plan to see you all there. I will check my computer later. For some reason my phone shows the maybe accept or decline even though I have done all that actually more like 2 weeks ago. I just tried the accept but being that the hike is closed it won't take. Anyway, see you at my hometown beach in a bit

It's not bad here in holland at all, barely a drizzle. Mainly just have a shell that keeps you dry if it is more than that. This is my report at 9:20am

So the plan is to "meetup" haha, at the Holland State Park Pavilion facing the lake on the beach, right? Its the best spot to gather at the beach.
I have no idea what you guys thoughts are but maybe going out to the local pub (New Holland Brewery) later that night is something of interest for those who are traveling in and make it a day out. I see lunch is planned for beechwood inn so after that maybe we could hang out at my place and then go out later. It's just an idea right now. I guess we can see what people are up for on the hike.

i am laughing a little because the more information the more confusing it seems to be that is why i suggested to meet at the one and only pavilion lol. See you by the sidewalk leading to the Holland State park pier which is white. To the morrow

I checked out the beach and park yesterday. both are in good shape. no one at the playground! tomorrow 41 degrees and 30% chance of precip. until midday. someone bring a cell phone. i'll have mine. that way when you reach the hour point you can let me know you're turning around.
if you're not going tomorrow we have to discuss the hike Kevin proposed for the 15th or 16th of the month.

    Dave, Terri, and Lisa
you're not stirring up anything. Trying this type of hike for the first time-it is for 2 hours. Not a specific destination like a regular hike. The group of 25 will be at different speeds and probably a little sprawled out. Like I said my main concern is for safety of everyone-never know what can happen on the sand. I will always be in the back as the "sweep" for safety of hikers and to take photos plus my body doesn't go fast-never did. We may have to use cell phones for someone in the main group to let me know they are at the 1 hour point and will be turning around.
A normal hike would describe break and end points so all know what is going on no matter what their speed.
We may find that this type of hike doesn't work. We also may find that a hike on the beach is boring.

Great conversation folks. I think it's cool to talk about what we all expect from our meetups. Lots of different people with different skills and thoughts. These were some that I had from the past. Pete, you just happened to be the one to facilitate the conversation. Glad we could do it properly and respectfully. Take care.

thanks everyone for the viewpoints. have to remember we are talking or writing to thinking adults. Not a bunch of kids. we can try to have these discussions on the hike-if it's not distracting. certainly after the hike when we stop for a bit to eat and drink. Maybe you can make the next one Dave.

    Graham,
the easiest thing is to delete them. Some of these points may apply to this hike and other points apply to others. Then you get into nothing but a discussion of which applies to which hike. (like lawyers discussing a case). I chose to leave it alone as basics.
Remember this group is composed of hikers of different skill levels. Some are just starting , others like you having been doing it for years. Also remember that people have different degrees of common sense. I can tell you stories of people who hiked in the desert and forgot basic survival things.
As we get into more interesting short hikes with the snow then the expectations may have to change. Those will be discussed on this board.

    December 5, 2012

  • A former member
    A former member

We can also say that the expectations do not apply to this hike because there is no map. everyone just exercise good common sense.

    December 5, 2012

  • Dave G.

Pete, I'm sorry, but I have to weigh in on these expectations. I am having trouble understanding how you are going to host 30 people and expect them to be within "eyesight" of you. We all walk at different paces, create our mini-groups, and have different things that stop or speed us along the way. I think it is better to give maps and create stop points along the way to gather the hikers that go out in front as well as those that hike a slower hike. I'm not trying to start negative talk, and I hope to see you all on the trail soon, but I had to share my thoughts.

    1 · December 4, 2012

I have to agree Dave..I could understand if there was a chance of danger of someone getting lost but this is Holland State Park...just my thoughts

I am glad that Dave points out a point that may concern some of us. Dave is making a good point--By setting certain meet-up points along the trails will allow people break up to mini-groups to go at a pace according to their fitness level and hiking experience, and it will also allow people who want to stop and take photos without affecting people who want to continue at a steady pace.

I have to put a limit on this hike of 31. Any one else will be on a waiting list.
As we get into more interesting and challenging places to go and the change in the weather (snow and ice), there is a concern for the safety of all of you. With that in mind, each of you will read what is expected of you on one of my hikes-not Kelly's. If you agree with it, then sign and date it and return to me. If you don't want to sign it, then you hike on your own and are not a part of this group.
This will start with the hike this Saturday at Holland State Park.

    December 2, 2012

    • Kelly

Pete would like attendees on his hikes to be aware of expections that he has for his hike and that is what he is asking you to read and sign. This does not apply to hikes lead by other organizers.

Can't wait till I get back home after the 1st and get some hiking in. Looking forward to meeting all of you. In the mean time I have been exploring most of the hiking trails down here in Florida with the Suncoast Hiking and Backpacking Group. Did hike thru a grove of spruce (didn't even know they had any here)....got me homesick for Michigan. Nothing beats our North Country Trail.

To translate this "Park in the lot that has swings and picnic table. We will meet there and walk down to the beach past the lighthouse." I think he means the farthest lot from the entrance that is a loop by the pavilion. The first lot is huge like a Meijer parking lot.

I think the limit should be set higher at least to 18 to 20 people because the past hiking experiences show that there are always some people who have signed up and do not show up.

the route wuld be the trail through Lake Macatawa and Ottawa Beach. Depending on how the group feels and the weather we could do the stairway-a real challenge. I think its called Olive Shores-did that on 11/11 and there was 171 steps.

    November 12, 2012

Olive Shores is near Port Sheldon. The stairs near Holland State Park are part of the Mt Pisgah Dunes Boardwalk.
