THIS IS AN OVERNIGHT BACKPACK through the beautiful Sheep Mountain Wilderness area. We will meet in Azusa at 8am (directions below), then drive to the East Fork Ranger Station (14 miles, about 30 minutes). From there we will hike to the Bridge to Nowhere (5 miles) then into the East Fork Narrows (about a half a mile farther). We will hike at an EXTREMELY SLOWPOKE pace along the wild and beautiful East Fork of the San Gabriel River. Some boulder hopping, rock scrambling, and many stream crossings. With lots of breaks it will take about 4 hours to hike to the place we will set up camp.
After we set up camp we will go a little further up the canyon and explore along the Iron Fork. Sunday we can do more exploring in the area before we head back if everyone is up for it, or we can just hang out at camp. WE WILL NOT START HIKING BACK TO THE RANGER STATION UNTIL ABOUT 4 or 5pm ON SUNDAY. The reason for this is that I would like to spend the day in the wilderness, not the city.
We can explore, relax, go swimming, it will be a FUN ADVENTURE!!!
Note: You MAY get WET! This is a challenging hike mainly because it is rocky and we will have heavy packs on- you will need energy! I HAVE NOT BEEN UP IRON FORK BEFORE, THEREFORE THIS IS AN EXPLORATORY HIKE!
If you think you might want to go faster than the leader and stray from the group, please don't sign up for this hike. For social and safety reasons I would like the group to stay together. SLOWPOKES ONLY!!
If you need to be back at a certain time on Sunday please do not sign up for this hike.
BRING: At least 2 quarts water (I will have a water purifier if you need to refill), tons of food, warm clothes (it can get cold at night sometimes), hiking shoes or boots that can get wet, flashlight or headlamp, raincoat?, bathing suit (optional), tent, sleeping bag, Adventure Pass, book to read (optional) and 10 essentials are recommended but not required. No camp fires are allowed.
RAIN DOES NOT CANCEL! (That's what raincoats are for).
You will need an ADVENTURE PASS if you plan on driving to the trailhead from the rideshare point. They can be purchased from Sport Chalet or REI or any ranger station. There is a booth to buy them at in Azusa, but you can't always depend on it being open.
Directions to the RIDESHARE POINT in Azusa:
from the westside: 105 or 10 east, 605 north, 210 east, exit at Azusa Av. Go north (left) toward the mountains. Go left at Foothill Bl., then right into the CVS parking lot (NW corner of Azusa Av. and Foothill Bl.).
from the valley: 118 east, 210 east, then follow directions above.
