When: Saturday, December 18,[masked]:30 AM

Where: Chantry Flat
Santa Anita Canyon Rd

CHANTRY FLATS TO CAMP STURTEVANT

"Sturtevant Camp, that wonderful oasis high in the San Gabriels that has been in continuous operation for almost 120 years, is sadly ceasing operations at the end of the year. I've hiked to Sturtevant many, many times over the years and had lots of delightful conversations with Chris, the caretaker, who has welcomed our group on numerous occasions and regaled us with stories about the camp's unique history.

But unless a buyer is found, which looks unlikely at this point, the camp will close its doors on Dec. 31. Chris is holding an Open House on Dec. 18th to say goodbye to all of his friends, and I wouldn't miss it for the world."

(Those last two paragraphs I stole from Tim's Earlybird Hikers Meetup- I hope he doesn't mind!)

8mi round trip, 1400' elevation gain (gradual uphill going in) VERY SLOW paced hike through the beautiful Big Santa Anita Canyon. Lots of big-cone spruce, CA Laurels, canyon live oak, maple & alder trees. We will pass some old cabins and waterfalls on the way. We will end up at Camp Sturtevant, a very beautiful camp- with old cabins, a lodge, and mess hall (built in 1897). We will be following the stream, but you MIGHT be able to keep your feet dry if you try. Very scenic!

The trail is fairly smooth- not too rocky. It's not too difficult, but it IS UPHILL on the way in.

It's a 4-6 hour hike round trip, depending on how fast the group is. I DON'T KNOW HOW LONG WE WILL STAY AT THE CAMP. SINCE THE CAMP IS CLOSING I DON'T WANT TO RUSH BACK- WE MAY STAY THERE AWHILE. You can hike back out without the group if you want, but try to hike out with someone instead if possible. Please do not go if you have someplace you have to be by a certain time later that day/night- we do not want to have to rush back.

Bring 2 quarts water, lunch, hiking boots, raincoat, and warm clothes.

Rain does NOT cancel (unless it's a downpour)!!!!

Sorry it's so early, but parking is difficult at Chantry Flats, plus due to the party at Camp Sturtevant there will be even more people. Please allow extra time for parking and driving on the windy mountain road.
