Hi Wild Ones!
Sorry I haven't scheduled a hike in awhile!!!! I go to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan for 6 weeks every summer. There's great wilderness to hike in there- I'll post some pictures in the photo albums for anyone who is interested. I just got back from Michigan.
I spoke with a lady from the San Gabriel River Ranger District of the Angeles National Forest today. This is what she said:
The whole Angeles National Forest is closed. The Morris Fire is 100% contained. The Station Fire is about 60% contained on the west end, but not on the east end. It is named the Station Fire because it was started next to a fire station (which also burned). The fire goes as far east as Azusa Av. (39), so SO FAR the Bridge to Nowhere area is not burning (The bridge is east of Azusa Av.). Chantry Flats has burned (I haven't called yet to find out if Camp Sturtevant survived the fire). At least part of (maybe all of?) Devil's Canyon has burned. All of the LA River Ranger District of the Angeles National Forest has burned. It is now the San Gabriel River Ranger District (farther east) that is burning. As you probably know, the fire is a case of arson.
She also said that they are not taking volunteers at this time, but will need volunteers after the fires are out to plant trees, etc. I am on a call list, so she will let me know when help is needed. I'll keep you posted.
For more fire info you can go to inciweb.com.
The next hike will TENTATIVELY be September 26th in Santa Paula Canyon (Los Padres National Forest). I want to check that date and also find out if there is water in the stream there (this time of year it is sometimes dried up, which can make the hike not so fun). Another option is Upper Zumma Canyon in the Santa Monica Mountains.
THANK YOU TO ALL THE FIREFIGHTERS AND OTHERS WHO HAVE HELPED OUT IN FIGHTING THE FIRES!!!!!!!
Hope to see you on the trail soon!
