New Meetup: Santa Paula Canyon

Announcing a new Meetup for Wild Wild West Hardcore Slowpoke River Canyon Hikers!

What: Santa Paula Canyon

When: November 7,[masked]:30 AM

Sylmar Rideshare point
Encinitas St.
Sylmar, CA 91342

We will MEET AT the Sylmar Rideshare Point at 7:30am (Sorry it's so early- but we will need the daylight since it's a long hike). Take the 405 north to the 5 north, go right at the Roxford Exit, then another right immediately onto Encinitas St. Park on the street by the Denny's and McDonalds.

From the rideshare point we can carpool to the trailhead since the parking there is limited. The trailhead is at St. Thomas Aquanis College in Santa Paula (on the way to Ohai). I have maps with directions from the rideshare to the trailhead that I will give out. You will not need a parking pass.

DETAILS: Most of the hikes we do will be in the San Gabriel Mountains, but this one is in the Los Padres National Forest. It's a little farther drive than most of the hikes we do but I think it's worth the drive (about 1.5 hours from LA to the trailhead).

This is a challenging hike- YOU WILL NEED A LOT OF ENERGY and it will be a long day at a slowpoke pace! It is ROUGHLY 7 miles with very little elevation gain. Somewhere around 9 HOURS- longer if we explore a little side canyon (WE MAY DO THE LAST HOUR OR SO OF THE HIKE IN THE DARK). LOTS of rock hopping and some stream crossings (YOU MAY GET YOUR FEET WET!). There's a cool waterfall/swimming hole, although it will probably be too cold to swim this time of year (you never know, though- if you want to bring a bathing suit!). Cool rock formations called the 'punchbowls'. For anyone interested in exploring the side canyon you may have to wade in water up to your waist just for about 10 feet (YOU MAY WANT TO BRING A SPARE PAIR OF PANTS TO CHANGE INTO FOR THIS SO YOU DON'T GET COLD WEARING WET CLOTHES). If you don't want to do the side canyon you don't have to, you can wait for those who do want to do it. The side canyon is really beautiful, and few people go into it.

You can see lots of PICTURES of this hike in the Santa Paula Canyon albums on this site.

****BRING: food for lunch & dinner, at least 2 qts. water, shoes or hiking boots that can get wet, bathing suit (optional), extra pants (in case you get wet), warm clothes just in case, sunscreen, and flashlight or headlamp.
