Announcing a new Meetup for Wild Wild West Hardcore Slowpoke River Canyon Hikers!
What: Santa Paula Canyon
When: Saturday, May 15,[masked]:30 AM
Sylmar Rideshare point
Sylmar, CA 91342
We will MEET AT the Sylmar Rideshare Point at 7:30am. Take the 405 north to the 5 north, go right at the Roxford Exit, then another right (immediately) on Encinitas St. Park on the street by the Denny's and McDonalds.
From the rideshare point we can CARPOOL to the trailhead since the parking there is limited. The trailhead is at St. Thomas Aquanis College in Santa Paula (on the way to Ohai). I have maps with directions from the rideshare to the trailhead that I will give out. You will not need a parking pass.
DETAILS: This beautiful canyon is in the Los Padres National Forest. It's a little farther drive than most of the hikes we do but I think it's worth the drive (about 1.5 hours from LA to the trailhead). About 8-9 miles round trip, about 1200 ft. elevation gain. It is a challenging hike- YOU WILL NEED A LOT OF ENERGY and it will be a long day at an extremely slowpoke pace! Somewhere around 10-12 HOURS. LOTS of rock hopping. There's a cool waterfall/swimming hole if there's enough water. Cool rock formations called the 'punchbowls' and 'moonrocks'. We will be exploring a SIDE CANYON. To get into the side canyon you will have to either wade in 4 feet deep water for about 10 feet (recommended) ( the way I go) or climb on the side of a small cliff (not recommended unless you are experienced at bouldering/rock climbing and not afraid of heights). If you don't want to do the side canyon you don't have to, you can wait for those who do want to do it. You will have to wait about 2 hours, so you may want to bring a book or something.
THIS IS A LONG HIKE. YOU WILL BE TIRED AFTER THE HIKE! DO NOT SIGN UP FOR THIS HIKE IF YOU HAVE SOMETHING YOU WANT TO DO LATER THAT EVENING!
******Due to fires in the last year the terrain has changed in the canyon. There may be parts of the trail that are no longer there, and it may be difficult finding the side canyon. How far we go up the canyon will depend on conditions and the water level. Please have a sense of adventure- this is a somewhat exploratory hike!!!!!
You can see PICTURES of this hike in the Santa Paula Canyon album on this site (page 2 of the photo albums- May 24th 2008 hike. We did it again on a later date but didn't take as many pictures).
BRING: food for lunch & dinner, AT LEAST 2 qts. water, shoes or hiking boots that can get wet, bathing suit (optional), warm clothes just in case, sunscreen, bug repellent (for ticks).
