Olentangy Trail -- Hike #4

One of the most popular greenways in Ohio, the Olentangy Greenway Trail offers a seamless 13.75 mile route from Worthington Hills to Confluence Park in downtown Columbus.  The trail winds through several neighborhoods along the Olentangy River, with trailheads at several major parks, including Antrim Park and Whetstone Park.  The path also travels through the heart of the Ohio State University Campus.

In December we hiked the northern-most 3.6 miles of this trail, from Worthington Hills to Antrim Park.  In January we hiked the next 3.25 miles from Antrim Park to Whetstone Park.  In February we hiked the next 3.25 miles from Whetstone Park to Tuttle Park.  This time we're going to continue heading south and explore the southern-most 3.5-mile section of trail that runs from Tuttle Park which is located just north of Lane Avenue at the Ohio State University Campus to The Boat House at Confluence Park which is located just outside of downtown Columbus where the Olentangy and Scioto Rivers join.  This hike is very flat and easy, most of which is paved.  And FYI, while this section of the trail does follow the Olentangy river for the most part, this is not the most wooded section of the trail, think OSU.

Again, you get to choose how far you want to hike.  Both hikes start at the same place, at The Boat House at Confluence Park in the back of the parking lot.  We will meet at 10:00 AM and start hiking by no later than 10:15.  The Boat House at Confluence Park, formerly known as the Confluence Restaurant, can be accessed from Souder Avenue.  Turn onto Souder from Dublin Road (Rt. 33) and take the first left onto Rickenbacker Drive.  The Boat House sign is visible at the turn.

Choice #1 -- Hike the total roundtrip hike from The Boat House at Confluence Park to Tuttle Park/Lane Avenue and back.  The total roundtrip hike is approximately 7.0 miles.  If you plan on hiking the full roundtrip distance then park your car at The Boat House at Confluence Park as described above and your car will be waiting for you when you return.

Choice #2 -- Hike only half the full roundtrip distance.  Start at The Boat House at Confluence Park and hike to Tuttle Park.  The one-way distance is approximately 3.5 miles.  If you plan on hiking the shorter distance then meet me at 9:15 AM at Tuttle Park.  Tuttle Park is located at 240 W. Oakland Avenue, Columbus, OH (just north of Lane Avenue and west of Neil Avenue on the west side of the river).  From there we will leave some cars and carpool promptly at 9:35 to The Boat House at Confluence Park to meet up with those who are hiking the total roundtrip hike.  This way your cars will be waiting for you when you get to Tuttle Park.

Please keep in mind we are walking a biking path so we will need to be mindful to stay to the right side of the path to allow runners and bicycles room to get by.  Also, this is a responsible dog-friendly hike (leashes and clean-up please).

For those who are interested, I have arranged for lunch after the hike at the Rusty Bucket at 1635 West Lane Avenue, Columbus, OH 43221, which is located in the Lane Avenue Shopping Center just west of OSU.  If you're traveling from Tuttle Park, just head west on Lane Avenue about 2-3 miles and the shopping center will be on your left.  If you're traveling from The Boat House, take Dublin Road to Lane Avenue, turn right on Lane Avenue and the shopping center is about 3-4 miles on the right.  Parking is available in the front and back of the shopping center.   Whether you hike the full roundtrip hike or the shorter one-way hike, the Rusty Bucket is expecting us and knows we may arrive at different times.  Our reservation is from 11:30 AM - 2:00 PM in the outside covered patio.

More information and my cell phone number will be provided closer to the meetup.

The hike is on! See you at 9:15 at Tuttle for those of you who want to hike the short hike and then 10:00 at The Boat House where we'll start our hike. The rain is forecasted to be spotty this morning so be sure and bring your rain gear. Thunderstorms aren't forecasted until afternoon.

As I emailed most of you last night I'm watching the weather reports. So far, although some rain may come through tonight, the forecast for tomorrow calls for the rain to hold off until the afternoon. I will make a final decision around 8:00ish AM Saturday and if cancelled will post here on this site. If there are some sprinkles in the area be sure and dress accordingly.

My apologies but I didn't check to see if there were any other major events scheduled for Saturday and it appears the Komen Race for the Cure is scheduled. However, it doesn't appear that it should cause too much of a conflict because it is happening just east of us downtown, it starts at 7:00 and ends at 10:45, and The Boat House at Confluence Park is not allowing parking for the Komen Race and has given us permission to park some cars (I told them no more than 10, LOL, we'll see how that goes) as long as we're way in the back near the kayaks. So if you're only planning on hiking the 3.5 mile shorter hike, be sure and meet me at Tuttle Park to decrease the number of cars we have at The Boat House. So as long as the weather is good we should be able to enjoy our hike. Unless there is severe weather in the area (thunder, lightening, high winds, hail, torrential downpours) I do plan on holding the hike. I'll be watching the weather and will keep you updated.

Tara, I don't know where you live or if you can walk to The Boat House, but if there is somewhere I can easily pick you up and drop you off, let me know and I'll try and help. If not, sorry for the inconvenience. I emailed everyone my phone number last night so feel free to contact me if you want.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
