13 Miles at Clear Creek on October 13, 2013

Clear Creek is a Columbus Metro Park in the foothills of the Hocking Hills. Beautiful scenery, challenging elevation and well kept trails. There are stunning rock formations as we are only 15 minutes north of Hocking Hills. Clear Creek is this little jewel that very few know of or go to as the focus is always on Hocking Hills. This metro park is often used as a training ground for much more strenuous hikes.

The hike will be about 13 or so miles with elevation and a brisk pace (around 3.5 mph).  We will stop as necessary however this hike is meant to be more of a challenge. No dogs are allowed on the trails. We will start off on the Cemetery Ridge Trail and connect to the Chestnut Trail, Lake Trail then to the picnic area for lunch/snack. Our return is the Chestnut Trail to Cemetery Ridge for a short bit then on to the Fern Trail, Hemlock Trail and our return is the Creekside Meadows Trail to the parking area. Hemlock begins with elevation and at this point you may feel "the burn" as we will have hiked many other hills.

We will meet at the Creekside Meadows picinic area/parking lot at 10:00am ET. First lot on your left. There is a porta potty at this parking lot. Nice bathrooms (flush toilets) and a covered picnic area at the halfway point where we will have lunch/a snack.

The address is:

185 Clear Creek Road, Rockbridge, OH 43149 (northern Hocking & southern Fairfield counties)

Below is a link to the trail map:

There is a gas station at the corner of 33 when you turn into the park. It has a Subway sandwich shop inside as well as beer and other sundries. It is very clean and offers much if you need anything.

Please bring plenty of water and an extra pair of socks (just in case it rained the week before). Bring a smile, a laugh, and be ready for an awesome hike.

Have company coming. Is this a continuous trail, or segments where you can do part of it?

    October 10, 2013

    • Nick

Hey Loretta---- Marilyn and I could be interested in doing a shorter hike than the 13 miler if you are interested. We know our way around Clear Creek and have hiked it extensively. Not sure she cares to do 13 miles but we could do 6-8 if you might be interested in joining us. Let me know if that might interest you. Our home number is (614)[masked] in Pickerington. Thanks----Nick

right before we start on the Chestnut trail you can begin to make your return back to the parking lot. I plan on offering this to everyone. I encourage everyone to take a trail map with them. They are located at the parking lot and the trails are very well marked.

For some reason I am having difficulty updating this meetup to include the Carpool Information, so here it is. Hikers can meet at Lowes at 3899 South High Street, Columbus, OH. I recommend that you meet at 8:45am and depart at 9am. At this time I do not plan on carpooling so you will hopefully recognize your fellow hikers from their dress or perhaps backpack! There is also the option to go out for a late lunch after the hike. Millstone is just south of Clear Creek and those interested can eat there if you like. I will have to call and let them know how many plan on going to the restaurant. If you want to send me a message ONLY IF you want to go to the restaurant after the hike I would appreciate it.

I will be posting a carpool location for the Cbus crowd, and the trails we will be hiking, including a map for your convenience in the not too distant future.

Had to change my mind about this hike, I know I am in no shape for a fast-paced 13 miles, but I will try another hike with you sometime soon. I have been going to the Clear Creek Valley since I was a teenager and have actually slept in the Ed Thomas cabin twice and camped there many times as a member of the Wheaton Club, which Ed Thomas founded many years ago, I love it there and will always come back. Details will be posted as we get closer to the date. Dogs are not allowed on the trails. This will be a faster paced hike compared to the one I led at Clear Creek in June as the heat should not be a challenge. Attendees need to be capable of hiking at 3.5+ with few breaks. This park offers challenging elevation that we will be taking advantage of from start to finish.

Hey Phil---at least the temperatures won't be in the 90's in October, at least I hope not!

    July 17, 2013

  • Phil

I initially read the title as 13 miles on Clear Creek and was exited. Then realized it was a hike. I don't know if I could hike 13 flat miles, but am certain I can not do 13 miles of hills. I'll leave this hike to you young pups.
