East Rock in New Haven (A new location!)

Greetings! Please join us for a new adventure at East Rock park -- a surprisingly woodsy walk given the park's proximity to Downtown -- and be prepared for a stop at the top and an amazing view of New Haven from above.

WHERE:  Please park and meet in the lot that sits exactly at the corner of Willow Street and Mitchell Drive (very close to exit 6 off of I-91; see below for directions).  There is no charge for parking there. We will walk to East Rock. Please do not leave your car on the street, in other nearby lots, or at the high school.

DIRECTIONS: From the north: Find your way to I-91 and take exit 6 (Willow Street), turn right at ramp, go a short distance and at the bottom of the small hill, at Mitchell Drive traffic light, you will see the parking area to your right. Turn right on Mitchell. You enter the lot just before that road curves to the left.  From points east or west / from I-95 north or south: connect to I-91 North at exit 48, and follow Exit 6 directions above. (Right on Willow and so on). From downtown or East Rock neighborhood: walk/drive down willow street away from Whitney Avenue. The intersection with Mitchell Drive is 6 or 8 long blocks from Whitney. Cross Mitchell Drive and turn left; the parking lot is immediately to your right.

PARKING NOTE: There is no charge for parking in the lot referenced above. We will walk to East Rock. Please do not leave your car on the street, in other nearby lots, or at the high school.

WEATHER: If rain is falling from the sky, we will NOT meet up. If the ground is wet but no rain is falling, we WILL meet up.

$1-2 DONATION: Donations cover the annual cost of the website ($228), ensuring that the group page remains active during all seasons from year to year. Folks have inquired about using other sites to organize events. Unlike free options for web-based organization of activities, the "meetup" service facilitates networking among a massive and ever-growing number of participants, as opposed to a limited, slow-growing roster. For this benefit there is a cost; please keep this in mind when considering whether or not to contribute.$1-2 DONATION: Donations cover the annual cost of the website ($228), ensuring that the group page remains active during all seasons from year to year. I enjoy East Rock, but I'm tempted to walk again with a trash bag and gloves and clean up some litter. Maybe check with the city first to see if they already have people that do that. Another meetup? The de-litter hike? (Headline: man falls from cliff picking up bottlecap... )

Good find. Looks like have preset work days for cleanup. I'd be willing to help out.

Emailed a couple people. Sounds like they already have some groups who clean up litter, or will be soon, so I'm not going to do it, for now. The ranger did say that if we ever help out, leave any bags by the existing trash cans.

Darn....can't make it this time. I've done this hike on my own and it is amazing.
I should also add that this group is amazing. Always friendly and welcoming. This largely due to Sarah's efforts to foster a culture of understanding and compassion as we gather to get a little exercise. I know that what I receive in exchage for a small monetary contribution is surpassed 100 fold.
Thanks so much Sarah for doing this and for keeping the group alive!
