Canoeing/kayaking

We will meet at Black Creek Canoe Rental. Please go to their website for directions. It is a small town and I'm not sure how well GPS will do with directions. http://blackcreekcanoe.com/welcome.htm

The choices for day trips are trip 1, 2, or 3. See descriptions at the link below.

http://blackcreekcanoe.com/trips.htm

The prices for two person canoe/kayake : $32 or $40 depending on which trip we take.

The prices for one person canoe/kayake: $25 or $35 depending on which trip we take.

If you have your own canoe/kayake transportation fee: $15 or $20 depending on which trip we take.

Overnight trips have their own fees.

We had a good trip - despite getting a little rained on!! If anyone has pics to share I'd love to see them! Kelly? Calvin?

I'm passing on this, it's bucketing down rain here and I won't make the 10am start time. Have fun!

We are well below the 8ft mark by about 3.75ft and weather in Brooklyn, MS is overcast 73deg F. Lets go canoeing/kayaking!!

    July 19, 2014

    • Kelly S.

Still be prepared for a little rain. That's still in the forecast for the mid to late afternoon.

Hi, I'm interested in going, rain or shine, if it's Trip 1, the longer trip. If the shorter trip, not as interested given the long drive. I'd be driving from New Orleans, and have my own kayak, with racks for 2nd boat and would be open to carpooling. Does it look like Trip #1 or 2 at this point?

Great, we'll stay tuned for the weather. I looked for what time we're supposed to meet but did not see that, can you advise? Thanks!

    July 17, 2014

I will be sending out an e-mail Friday afternoon if the event is still on. If there is a last minute change on Saturday I will post here. Right now it looks like 1/10in. per 6hrs of rain. Which will probably do more to cool us off than anything.

Kelly, I will be needing a single kayak or canoe. I don't mind a little rain, but what happens in the case of lightning? Thanks,
    Michelle

    July 16, 2014

    • Kelly S.

Unfortunately there is no forecast for lightning. We will know when we get there.

      July 17, 2014

  • Kelly S.

I need a count of who is renting a kayak. When I called the rental place they said they anticipate a shortage of kayaks for Saturday. Please specify if single or double. Please only respond if you are coming rain or shine.

I'm in - but not looking like my +1 is gonna make it. I am ok with either canoe or kayak but I'd like to try kayak.

Kelly, I'd like a single kayak. I don't mind a little rain if it happens. Thanks

Do we rent the canoe on site?

    July 15, 2014

    • Kelly S.

Yes, Canoe and kayak rentals will be at Black Creek Canoe Rental.

      July 16, 2014

    • Kelly S.

We will figure out paddle partners for those that need one there at the rental shop.

      July 16, 2014

  • Kelly S.

Extended forecast doesn't look too good. I will be keeping an eye on the models and keep you posted.

    July 14, 2014

    • Kelly S.

It looks like there will be some rain for Saturday but less than 1/4in.

    Hi everyone!
    I vote for trip one!
I am an experienced canoer and I'll be leaving from Folsom, through Covington and Slidell and have a Nissan Murano with plenty of room for ride sharing and gear. Anyone want to share a ride and/or a canoe with me?

Looking forward to meeting everyone. If anyone could give me suggegestions/ideas of how the canoeing/float trips around here go: wear bathing suits, coolers, level of difficulty? Thanks. Want to come prepared!

Any recommendations on what type of shoes to wear?

Old tennis shoes are best but u can use sandals, flip flops, socks , crocs , what ever . Old shoes help battle rocks and sand . The creek beds are sandy with round pebbles and sunken logs spred about

if theres a vote id say black creek as the current is slow and easy for non experienced paddlers and plenty beaches for swimming .heres a recent write up about black creek by jack for some incite on what to expect . and theres info on hiking and biking in that area also. http://neworleansoutdoorcompanion.blogspot.com/2014/05/paddling-conditions-for-black-creek-on.html

I haven't been to Okatoma in >15 years, but it used to be pretty easygoing with a couple of mild rapids. The Black is, as it has always been, calm and surprisingly cool. It has way more traffic than I remember from the old days though. I suppose Okatoma does as well.

    June 30, 2014

    • Kelly S.

Okatoma is fairly crowded that was why I was leaning toward Black Creek. But I'm always open to persuasion.

Wish I could join y'all, but I already have plans for that afternoon! Next time!
