Shuttle Hike - Starting from Barton Springs

We will start from Barton Springs and car pool half the cars up to Scottish Woods Trail - to hike the entire length of Barton Creek - but only one way, then drive folks up to their cars at Scottish Woods.

  • We will try to leave Barton Springs by car at 7:45 AM, and try to leave the Scottish Woods trailhead by 8 am.  The hike is estimated to be about 3-3.5 hours, but we go the pace the group sets and sometimes estimates are wrong, shouldn't be much more than that - could be less.
  • From either Mopac or South Lamar get on Barton Springs Rd - heading toward Barton Springs.  From Barton Spring Rd, turn south into Barton Springs Park on William Barton Dr., stay on William Barton Dr. by bearing left at the fork, you should then see the Barton Springs bath house on your left.  Continue to the end of the parking lot spaces past Zilker Theater on your right and park.  If you turn right past the theater you have gone too far.

Wear good shoes, waterproof if convenient, because we may try to cross if the water is low enough somewhere.  Bring water, dogs are welcome, may also need water for dogs for some parts of the trail. Although unicorns are rare on the trail this time of year (Stokie likes to chase them), I'm hoping to see one.

Try to be on time, as we tend to leave on time unless you call and are running late. If you are a little late, please call my cell and we will wait for you.  Also people will ask if they can meet at Scottish Woods - sure, but no guarantee anyone will have a ride for you back... probably.

All you pikers missed a great hike! Nary a drop of rain, cool and great company. Thanks Dave!

My name is Jean and I am a fair weather hiker.

So by 8 am, it is down to 5% precipitation with 0% from 8:15 -12:30, so hike is on, for those who don't mind hiking on a wet trail

Looks too much like rain so I will skip this one!

Chance of rain is increasing. This will be my first hike with the group. What happens in case of rain?

    February 8, 2013

    • Michele

I can't speak for anyone else but if it's a light mist I'll probably still go. If it's raining cats, dogs and little fishies, probably not. Dave seems to go come Hell or High water. I'd say call his cell if you're unsure. (512)[masked]

The distance may be a bit more than I can do right now due to an injury, so I am thinking of starting by myself from B Creek and walking for 1-1 1/2 hrs and then find a place to sit and wait to meet you guys. I'll be doubling back, but I can estimate better my ability to complete the return leg after I have walked for a while. Looking forward to meeting people who like the early morning world.

Silly Dave. Unicorns are only in Europe. Bigfoot is another story. If it's not raining I will be there.

Would I able to catch a ride with someone? I'm visiting Austin from Australia and don't have a car here

I'll be staying close to where the walk leaves from so will be fine getting there. But may need a ride afterwards

      February 7, 2013

    • Michele

Well, I'm sure someone will give you a ride. After all, you'll have eight miles to make friends. Bring really good snacks, that'll help.
