Lake Georgetown - Shuttle Hike Starting at Cedar Breaks Park

OK - I moved it forward one week as a place holder - we'll see if it is open then.

Getting there: To get there head north on I-35 into Georgetown and turn left onto Highway 29 (Exit 261) and head west. Turn right onto D.B. Woods Road, bear left onto Cedar Breaks Rd.

Follow that until it ends and take a left into the park. After passing through the gate, the trail head is the first left, about 300 feet down the road. When I have gone there early on Sundays before there was no attendant.  If there is one tell them you’re going on the Goodwater trail and they shouldn’t charge you an entrance fee.

Next Shuttle to Tejas Camp: Back track on D B Woods (I always think of D B Cooper) Rd to 29, take a right on 29 another right on Ronald Reagan Blvd go 3.5 miles and take a final right on County Rd 258. 1.4 miles to Tejas parking and trail head.

This is an 11 mile hike, make sure you are in good shape and if you bring a dog make sure you bring lots of water for you and your dog.

When we get back to Ceder Breaks we will shuttle people back to their cars at Tejas.

Topics:

1 What do you think about Schneier's line "Whistleblowing is the new civil disobedience", is Edward Snowdon like this generation's freedom rider?

2 Google and AT&T duking it out for Austin - both laying fiber, I want to be in a Google Fiberhood - but competition can't be bad for us can it?

3 - Obamacare could fuel a tech start up allowing workers to quit their full time jobs and launch tech start ups?

4 - When I get older can I get an exo-skeleton to hike?  What about one for Stokie? Do dogs with exoskeletons run after rabbits with exoskeletons? Only when you can strap a pig to a drone (wait for it?).

This will probably about a 5 hour hike.  Bring water, good shoes, water for dogs if you are bringing a dog. As always call if you are running late or assume that we will have left the trail head on time.  If the park appears to be likely to be closed on Friday I will push the hike a week and schedule a different hike for Sunday morning.

David, I found a pair of sunglasses in my car under the front seat after driving you back to the start location. Are they yours?

Ha. You're not the only one. Can I just gun it to the our destination or do I 'have to take' the shuttle?

Sounds good. Then we'll go out 2222 to pick up Autumn. Can you meet at 6:45 AM to make sure there's plenty of time? Thanks. Looks like a 30 minute drive from Autumn's house to the hike.

I'm still confused. Where are we to meet first at 7:30AM?

    October 29, 2013

    • Wendy

I think we meet on Cedar Breaks Road at 7:30 AM

      November 1, 2013

    • Dave

That's correct, Cedar Breaks at 7:30 but tomorrow morning it will feel like 8:30 as we will have 'fallen back' (one hour change - don't forget your clocks)

Love the topics, going to try to make it. I already feel bad for the non-bionic rabbits. And I'm petrified for all of us once someone attaches gatling guns to the pre-existing cheetah robot.

I'll have to play this by ear. October is a busy month for me. If I can swing it I'll be there.

There is plenty of parking outside the entrance at Cedar Breaks. There is no entrance gate at the other end of Lake Georgetown. We would only have to hike the additional distance from the trail head to the parking area at the end of the hike.

    Plan B?

    http://www.swf-wc.usace.army.mil/georgetown/

Due to the Federal Government SHUTDOWN,
the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Lake Georgetown facilites are closed.
All facilites on Lake Georgetown will remain closed until further notice.

(No I did _not_ misspell facilities.)

I don't know how this impacts trail hiking, other than lack of access to the parking lots.

If anyone would like to carpool up there, let me know. I live in Crestview, off North Lamar at Airport Blvd.
