River Place Trail Hike

Directions - Take 2222 (either South from 620, or north from 360) and turn Southwest onto River Place Blvd (right if from 620, left if from 360).  Follow River Place Blvd until it ends on Big View Drive.  Turn right onto Big View Drive, continue until the lake is on your right and part.  Meet at the beginning of the path near the road.

What to talk about - well some possible topics are:

- What would lifelong Montessori educations look like? Probably can't always be 'Do what you love?' My starting point for this conversation is this New York Times article http://nyti.ms/1vkfZZg called 'A Life Beyond Do What You Love'

- A greater percentage of French people in core working age are working than in America - What's that about?

- Engineers have a reliable model that describes electrical behavior of proteins and how it changes when they bond to other molecules.  Is this basis for reliable bio-interfaces to devices (wearables, neural interface,...)

- What should the practical and achievable relationship between law and ethics? Would tests for emotional intelligence or social intelligence help?

- MIT Sloane school economists say automation maybe destroying more jobs than it creates, the economist Thomas Piketty says inequality is doing that are they both right? Neither?

Probably we'll talk about other stuff instead, but who knows?

Wear good shoes and bring water.  Also bring things to talk about, problems you want help solving, interesting trivia to share, ...

Please try to be on time, as we will leave at the posted time, unless we get a call, so feel free to call my cell:

Great hike! Thank you Dave and the other regulars for making my first meetup very enjoyable. My boots have dried out. No big deal for a bunch of super absorbent towels. Here's a link to YouTube of the video I took of Wally(sp?) with his toy stuck in the tree: Wally and the Tree: http://youtu.be/Sb2QXhhbMQU

Dave is absolutely THE best hiking guide in Austin! This is why I felt so very confident in bequeathing the group to his care. :)

I'll try to meetup with y'all next time I'm in the area...can't risk missing my flight back to SD this AM. BTW, "y'all" is the more politically correct and all inclusive contraction of "you all"...I'm trying to convince my fellow Californians to replace the usage of "you guys" with the more proper Texas originated "y'all" ! Ha ha...I've convinced quite a few to give it a try! See y'all next opportunity I get!

I never get the opportunity to actually talk about the conversation starters you post, but I just want to say, I think you may be confused about Montessori education. I have a lot of reservations about the method, but none of them are about kids getting to do and be whatever they want to be w/out limitations. It is very strange, also, how the author chides those for following their passion when he is a philosopher. And as far as automation is concerned, thankfully, my job is safe. This graph I saw a while ago is quite unusual.

Did the city open this hike to the public again?

    May 22

    • Dave

Mostly - we will have to skirt a small segment of protected trail

    How long is the hike?

    • Dave

This one will 3 hours or less, pretty sure.

I'll try to make it, but may cut too close to my scheduled flight back to San Diego.
