Location: near Muir Woods/Muir Beach, Marin
Volunteers for Outdoor California (V-O-Cal) will be rebuilding a well loved and well used section of the Bay Area Ridge Trail in Marin County this fall.
V-O-Cal will bring its volunteers to restore a section of the Miwok Trail, part of the popular signature event Ridge to Bridge , held every spring. The section of the trail in Mt. Tamalpais State Park is overgrown with brush and needs significant trail tread repair and improvement, with many switchbacks needing rehabilitation. V-O-Cal is also planning an event in 2010 to restore the section of the Miwok Trail in adjacent Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
Volunteers will work on the trail Saturday and Sunday. Free camping is available Friday and Saturday nights, and all meals provided from breakfast Saturday through lunch Sunday. Entertainment is usually provided Saturday evening. While camping is optional and participants are able to participate for one day, this will be a unique opportunity to relax after the work day and camp in a festive atmosphere with other volunteers. Camping will be at Santos Meadow, a secluded field in between Muir Woods and Muir Beach.
This is one of a series of work weekends the V-O-Cal has done on the Ridge Trail this year. For the full story, go here. For more information and to sign up to help re-build the Ridge Trail, visit the V-O-Cal Website.
V-O-Cal is an environmental stewardship organization focused on trail maintenance, trail construction, and habitat restoration. V-O-Cal engages the community through large-scale environmental stewardship projects on public lands. Their weekend long projects bring together up to 200 volunteers at parks and open spaces in the Bay Area. V-O-Cal provides volunteers with camping, food and entertainment to promote a festive atmosphere, encouraging many volunteers to return again and again. Since launching in 2006, V-O-Cal has built and restored many miles of trail in Northern California. The Council thanks V-O-Cal for their great work building and maintaining the Ridge Trail, and other Bay Area trails.
