Totally great day. Beautiful weather, not too hot, lots of people--350 sounds very possible, relatively short program, cake, very nice trails beautifully desginmed and constructed in a very special place.

Our 6-8 mile hike started with 8 people, was 12 for a while and ended with 10. We went up the Woodrat trail to the gate and passed horses and bicyclists on the multi-use trails in Fernandez. Once in Pinole Watershed, we went a ways along the ridge to the West. Great views, nice breeze--we turned around about where it plunges downhill in the direction of Sobrante Ridge Regional Preserve. Came back past the gate and continued in the watershed in the direction of Feeder Trail #1. EBMUD had mowed the new trail route in the last few days, so we followed that and had a picnic in the grass before coming back. Followed Fernandez Ranch's Whipsnake Trail along the contours of the hills back to the start for a total of 7.9 miles. Everyone was very impressed by the trail and the ranch.

I'll be leading the 6-8 mile hike through Fernandez into the Pinole Watershed, which links up directly to Sobrante Ridge Regional Preserve on one end, and also to Feeder Trail #1, which, when completed, will link to Muir Heritage Land Trust open spaces at SKy Ranch, Gustin Ranch and Dutra Ranch. So there will be lots of opportunities for long distance hiking from Fernandez, including the 5 -day EB Hills Trails Benefit Hike, which starts there on September 1.

    Hope to see you Saturday!
