Hike, Camp, Maintain the Bay Area Ridge Trail

This one brings me full circle. The last time I was at SugarLoaf, was in October, 2009, working on the Ridge Trail with the Volunteers for Outdoor California. On Saturday night a group of new people visited our camp fire, and it turned out they were part of a weekend that Hugo had organized with the Bay Area Ridge Trail and More Meet Up Group--which I had never heard of!Some of those people have been to several V-O-Cal weekends since then, and I have been to some of this group's Meet-Up events...

This year we arrive at Sugarloaf on Friday June 17, set up camp in the late afternoon, and stay through Sunday afternoon. V-O-Cal volunteers will perform much-needed trail maintenance on the Ridge Trail through Sugarloaf Ridge SP. It has been quite some time since any major maintenance has been done on this stretch of the Ridge Trail, so we will be providing some much-needed TLC.  You all are invited to join us

The project Fact sheet is HERE and you can register on THIS PAGE on the V-O-Cal web site for as much of the weekend as you have available. Camping is free and I think you know how much the trails need our attention. Meals will be provided Saturday and Sunday.

If you have never done a V-O-Cal project before, you will be very pleasantly surprised to see how much fun we have and how much good trail work gets done!

There will be some other V-O-Cal projects later in the year, but this may be the only one on the Bay Area Ridge Trail...

This was my first volunteer event with V-O-Cal, and it was a great experience. The group has a fun community feel, welcoming to newbies, and very dedicated to what they do. Good food too. I look forward to doing this again at a future event.

Th8s was a very cool weekend, even if it was kind of warm. Excellent community spirit--with 100 people there I never heard a harsh word spoken by anyone, and we all did an awesome job on the Pony Gate TRail section of the Bay Area Ridge Trail. About 40 drainage swales were installed on this trail that was built 30 years ago and apparently was more like a river than a trail in January. Several sections were closed, and quite a few vastly improved--widened, outsloped, with climbing turns, new trail signs. All done with great harmony, good food, a keg of Lagunitas IPA, donated Napa wine, great campfire both nights. Both the old-time V-O-Cal people and the ones who were there for the first or second time all agreed, and all the new ones plan on coming back.

Great to see the response so far! Don't forget to sign up for this on the V-O-Cal web site--they need a goo count for food and all. There is a link there for info on carpools--I haven't personally used that. I am going Friday and *may* have room for one person...

    HI Susan--

No you don NOT have to bring tools-V-O-Cal has an extenxive tool collection for these events, and trained crew leaders to teach how to use them safely and effectively!

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
